Brian Brown – The Heat is On!
(Bill W) January 5, 2015 – The 2015 race season is underway for the Brian Brown Racing Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team. It was a tough start Friday and Saturday in the “Winter Heat” event at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona. After climbing from heat difficulties to sixth place on Friday, an accident ended things early for the Grain Valley, Missouri driver on Saturday. The team will look to rebound tomorrow night, Friday and Saturday.
Friday night started out kind of rough didn’t it?
We started out with a decent draw, fifth in our heat. We went down on the first lap, and Steve (Kinser) kind of got sideways and four of us got collected. It ended up caving our header in on the right side. When we went to push off, there were only three cars out there, so I decided to stay out there. As we got rolling around, more cars came back, which kind of messed up my plan of going fifth to third by default.
You ended up pulling off in fifth.
We developed a little fuel fire, because of the cylinder shutting off. We didn’t end up finishing the heat, but the guys were able to get things cleaned up for the Qualifier, where we started and finished second.
That lined you up inside row seven for Friday’s feature.
We were able to make our way up to sixth. Overall, with the issues we had in the heat, 13th to sixth was a good run for us. We really didn’t feel like we needed to, so we went to work to be better Saturday.
You drew the pole for the heat, but that’s where your luck ended.
The first lap, going down the back straightaway, something broke on the left front and the wheel came off. That spun me around and we hit driver’s side into the fence.
Fortunately, you are o.k.!
I’m definitely thankful for my Butlerbuilt seat, Bell helmet, Hinchman uniform, Maxim chassis and the other key safety components that kept me safe there. At 140 miles per hour, you don’t want to hit driver’s side first. I’m just thankful to be talking about it. It wasn’t really the start we wanted, but we’re excited about getting back at it on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
How has the “Winter Heat” event been from your perspective?
Greg Burgess and his whole crew have done a phenomenal job. They’ve really rolled the red carpet out for the racers. From the parts truck being open all day in the hotel parking lot, to the tire truck being open, to the hotel accommodations. If you are freezing at home right now and want to see some racing, you need to get down here.
