Chargin' Charles Davis Jr. a Canyon winner at Cocopah!
Cody Morris, Yuma, Arizona (5-5-2012) - The non winged ASCS Canyon Region staged their first ever visit to Somerton, Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway Saturday night, completing a trio of Cinco de Mayo ASCS contests.
Nearly two months after hosting their first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by Mav TV card, Cocopah Speedway welcomed 25 topless ASCS Canyon Region teams for their inaugural hosting of the ASCS Canyon Region.
Cocopah delivered their first and only ASCS Canyon treat to area race fans, and the non winged stars did not disappoint.
Buckeye’s two-time ASCS Canyon Champion Charles Davis Jr. highlighted the evening with his second last lap pass for ASCS Canyon victory just four events into the 2012 campaign.
While Davis snared the point on the seventh circuit, a slew of stoppages kept the field bunched up, with an RJ Johnson tumble setting up a late dash for the inaugural 25 lap ASCS Canyon Region honor at Cocopah Speedway.
California’s Brody Roa slid past Davis in turns 1 and 2 on the final lap, but much to the delight of a packed house, Davis returned the favor in turns 3 and 4, snaring another exhilarating last lap victory aboard the Massey Motorsports, RSS Race Cars, DMI, Conrow PNUE Controls, Rod End Supply, CNR Machine, Bell Helmets, and Penske Shocks sponsored orange no. 50.
Roa settled for runner up honors despite the Californian’s spirited effort. Las Cruces, New Mexico’s perennial ASCS Southwest Region dominator Rick Ziehl claimed show position honors at the closing of the 25 lap main event.
Glendale, Arizona’s Bob Ream Jr. advanced four spots to finish the same at the final stripe, with Yuma’s hometown early main event leader Mike Martin completing the top five finishing order.
Gilbert, Arizona’s Brian Hosford claimed the Hard Charger effort, advancing 11 spots to an eighth place finish.
Charles Davis Jr., Brody Roa, and Bob Ream Jr. took heat race wins over the 25 car field. Chris Bonneau took the winning style transfer in the night’s only 10 lap B Feature.
Bob Ream Jr. and Chris Bonneau flipped on the first lap of the main event with Justin Quinn tumbling on lap four. RJ Johnson flipped twice in the main event with a lap 15 rollover precluding a lap 21 tumble. James Aragon flipped in the opening lap of the night’s third heat race. Each driver emerged safely from the tumbled wreckage.
The ASCS Canyon Region returns to action Saturday, May 12th at Apache Junction’s Arizona Speedway.
