DeWitt proves that patience is key to win at Diamond Park
(MURFREESBORO, AR) May 28, 2022 – Current National IMCA STARS points leader Gary Dewitt proved just how important patience, consistency, and some hard work pays off. He was able to keep himself in the front long enough to take the win in the first night of the 1st Annual Mod Lite Mayhem at Diamond Park Speedway.
The event, $3,000 to win and $300 to start the A Main continues Sunday with the (30) lap A Main presented by Joker Chassis. Only (27) entries checked in for the first night of racing action and four heat races were used to take the heat race winners and the top 14 in passing points to the nightly A qualifier.
Barry Nolan and the #9B found his way to victory in heat #1 with DeWitt in tow, DeWitt and his #24A advanced 5 spots, this - would be key later. The second heat race the checkers went to Chris Robinson driving the #20 Joker Riot, the third heat race was topped by Sheridan, Arkansas driver #KO Chad Kirkpatrick and his Edge Racing Chassis. The fourth and final heat race James ‘Big Daddy’ Rollins took the win in his #47RSidewinder Chassis.
This would set the stage for the nightly A Main Qualifier, with the 4 heat race winners on rows 1-2 and top passing points finishers in DeWitt, #005 Boogie Krajca, #777 Jeff Asher, and the #3T of Titan Crump completing rows 3-4.
The drop of the green flag saw the front two rows racing nearly in a dead heat at the line just the way they started for the first 5 circuits before caution flew for the #75 of Brandon Staggs, who rolled in turn 4. Staggs was able to get upright, go to the hot pit, change a tire and rejoin on the tail. On the restart a quick first corner tumult involving the #7 of Shane Jenkins, #28 Dylan Hollingshead, the #3T of Titan Crump, and the 916 of Grant Rollins sent all those drivers to the trailer except the #916 of Rollins, he changed a left rear and rejoined on the tail.
It was on that restart a hard charging Jeff Asher took the point after having advanced a few spots and he led for 5 laps until lap 11 when he lost all power and pulled to the infield, effectively ending his night. This would give the 5X of Codey Benoit the race lead and he would hold it until lap 18, actually stretching it out by almost a full 2 second lead over the field, until he slowed in top of turn 2 with mechanical woes. Insert patience and consistency here - the point then goes to the #29A of DeWitt. Dewitt would hold off some smoking hot charges from the #20 of Robinson, the #39 retro truck of Steve Sweere came home in 3rd, James Rollins fourth and Barry Nolan rounded out the top 5.
6th through tenth went to Kirkpatrick, #94KB Paul McCollett, #56 Larry Hubbard, Jr., #74PK Paul Alban and the #327 of Andrew Lincoln. Those top (10) drivers will redraw for position in the Joker Chassis ‘Dirty Draw’ and that race finish will determine the first 5 rows of the (30) lap, $3,000 to win A Main at the end of Sunday’s program.
All night 1 qualifiers and any new entries will duke it out in a pair of B Features where the top 5 from each will transfer into the A Main along with two provisional starters.
