Top-10 finish in Sunshine Nationals finale at Volusia

Making their 2021 speedweeks debut, Shane McDowell Racing and Dale McDowell invaded Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) on Thursday afternoon for the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals. Drawing 38 World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series entries, Dale laid down the second fastest lap overall in time trials behind Kyle Bronson before picking up a 10-lap heat race victory. Receiving the pole position via the redraw, McDowell rolled the right-front nose under his car in the opening laps and was never able to rebound from his ill-handling No. 17m entry. He ended up retiring early on lap 33 while being credited with a 22nd-place outing.

After losing Friday night’s program to Mother Nature, McDowell came one spot short of a transfer position in his heat on Saturday with a fifth place finish. Streaking to a 12-lap consolation victory, Dale locked into the 17th-starting position for the $10,000-to-win finale. Wheeling his way into the Top-10, Dale McDowell passed eight cars in the 40-lapper to place ninth.
