Norris Dominates Again - Full write up results for 8.10.24

If you missed the Heat Wave 25 Super Late Model race on Saturday night at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile, you missed a good one, to say the least, as it would go down in the history books with a new track record set in qualifying by Alex Ferree (1C) from Saxonburg, with a time of 16.826. After qualifying, PPMS would see eight heat races and five feature events. Michael Norris (02), from Sarver, put on a dominating performance in the 25-lap Super Late Model feature event as he led all 25 laps. Stephen Shelpman (17S), from Pleasant Hills, would win the make-up “Wee” Willie White Memorial for the Fuel Required Hobby Stock which was round two of the Stephen W Johnson Triple Crown and Shelpman (17S) would also pick up the win in the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock Feature. John Gil (19G) from Burgettstown, picked up win number two on the season for the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders, and Austin Siemon (18), from Castle Shannon, got his first career win in the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns feature.

Despite setting a new track record in qualifying with his brand new Rocket XR1, Ferree (1C) battled car trouble all night starting in the heat race as the car wouldn’t stay in high gear and he was forced to pull off before the green flag which would have him starting in P11 for the 25-lap a main feature event. Starting on the pole was John Garvin Jr. (J4), from Sarver, and he had Brian Hucko (60H), from Coraopolis, flanked to his outside. Norris (02) would start in third while Colton Flinner (48), from Allison Park, started to his outside in fourth. At the event's start, Norris (02) was shot out of a cannon and had the lead by the exit of turn two. By lap three, Norris (02) already had a full straight-away lead over the field and would soon enter lapped traffic. Lap 10 had Norris (02) still leading, Jared Miley (10) in second, and Ferree (1C) in third. However, Ferree (1C) was forced to pull into the pits shortly after due to overheating. Norris (02) continued to lap car after car and with the race going green to checkered in record fashion, Norris (02) would cruise to a 4.316-second win, and he lapped everyone except for second place Miley (10). Flinner (48) finished third while Kyle Lukon (184) finished fourth, and Tony White (27T) rounded out the top five. “Thanks to you guys for putting this deal on. Like I’ve always told you, I love coming here, that track was actually really demanding, I was getting kind of tired, it was super fast” Norris (02) takes home the $2,000 prize and more importantly, the track provisional for the upcoming Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Pittsburgher presented by Big River Steel October 4th & 5th. “I feel like that race owes me one a little bit, we’ve always been fast, and you know, just bad luck. So, we will see what we can do this year” Norris (02) also won his heat race with Colton Flinner (48) winning the other heat race for the Super Late Models.

The Koteles brothers of Logan (64k) and Jonathan (2K), both from Stockdale, would start one and two respectively in the 20-lap “Wee” Willie White Memorial for the Fuel Required Hobby Stocks which was round two of the Stephen W Johnson Triple Crown. Shelpman would start in third in the O’Patchen-owned 25R and Joey Brown (48), from Aliquippa, would complete the top two starting rows. After a four-wide salute and firework display, the green flag would drop and L. Koteles (64K) would claim the early lead. However, Shelpman (25R) would take over the lead at the line by lap two. Shelpman (25R) and the front runners would enter lapped traffic on lap four and he would increase his lead with each passing lap. By lap 13, Shelpman (25R) had a full straight-away lead over the field. However, with four laps to go, a lap 16 caution would slow the pace and rerack the field for the restart. When green replaced yellow, Shelpman (25R) would retain his lead over the field, lead the remaining four laps of the event, and go on to pick up his third Fuel Required Hobby Stock win of the season. He was followed to the line by L. Koteles (64K) in second, J. Koteles (2K) in third, Gary Koteles (65K) in fourth, and Garrett O’Patchen (25) completed the top five. The heat race winners were Shelpman (25R) and L. Koteles (64K).

In the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-lap feature, Jordan Perkins (13J), from New Castle, started on the pole with Larry Kugel (0), from Youngstown, Ohio, flanked to his outside. Dale Tuche (310), from Cheswick, started in third, and AJ Poljak (36) started in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Perkins (13J) would take the early lead. Perkins (13J) would lead until lap five when Poljak (36) would take it over. A lap seven caution for debris on the track would slow the pace. Under caution, Poljak (36) had a fire under his hood and after it was extinguished, he was forced to retire for the night. This would give the lead back to Perkins (13J) and he would take the outside on the restart which put Shelpman (17S) on his inside. When green replaced yellow, Shelpman (17S) would take over the lead with Perkins (13J) in second and Tony Magill (M5) in third. With two laps to go, a caution would slow the pace for a car that spun between turns one and two, and under caution, Shelpman (17S) spun to avoid the spun-out car. Shelpman (17S) was given his spot back since the caution was already out when he spun. He would lead the restart and keep his lead over the field. He would lead the remaining two laps and go on to pick up his second win of the night. He was followed by Perkins (13J) in second, Magill (M5) in third, Kugel (0) in fourth, and Jacob Billyk (4) rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were Poljak (36) and Perkins (13J).

Cameron Hollister (44), from McDonald, would start on the pole in the 10-lap Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder feature with John Gill (19) flanked to his outside. At the start of the event, Gill (19G) would pull away with the early lead with C. Hollister (44) behind him in second. Gil (19G) led the entire 10 laps despite C. Hollister (44) almost passing him on the last lap. Gill (19G) picked up his second win of the season and C. Hollister (44) finished second, AJ Mangangello (50) finished third, Ben Gariglio (83) finished fourth, and Tyler Hollister (69) completed the top five. The heat race winner was Gill (19G).

In the All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns eight-lap feature, Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, started on the pole with Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, starting to her outside in second. Hunter Vohn (124), from Industry, would start in third, and Austin Siemon (18) rounded out the four-car field. At the start of the event, Kokolis (91) would come away with the early lead. Lap three had Kokolis (91) still leading but Siemon (18) was now behind him in second. Siemon (18) would take over the lead on lap five, and go on to pick up his first career All Ways Safe Flagging And Traffic Control Young Guns win. Kokolis (91) finished second, Vohn (124) finished third, and Snatchko (56) finished fourth. The heat race winner was Kokolis (91).

Racing resumes at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway next Saturday, August 17th, 2024, with a MONSTER night for the kids as they take center stage on "Dirt's Monster Half Mile"! Kids ages 3-16 are invited to join the fun—no pre-registration needed. Just bring your bicycle and don’t forget that helmets are mandatory! Trophies will be awarded to the race winners, and every participant will go home with an award.

After the kids have their turn, stick around for an exhilarating night of high-speed, side-by-side racing at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. The lineup is packed with action, featuring the RUSH Sprint Car Series, the Rohrich Automotive/Chevy Performance RUSH Late Models, the Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, the Fuel Required Hobby Stocks, the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders, and the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns. It’s going to be an unforgettable night for the whole family!
