Imperial, PA (June 4, 2023)

It was a busy week at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile with two full shows. Starting on Thursday, Western PA Sprint Car Speedweek came to PPMS for night number two of their five-night tour of tracks throughout the area. Brandon Matus (13), from Wampum, would set the fast-time in qualifying with a time of 15.464. The 22 410 Sprint Cars were then broken into three heat races with the top three from each heat making the redraw. May 27th PPMS winner, AJ Flick (2), from Apollo, would redraw the pole position for the 25-lap feature event.

Flick (2) would lead all 25 laps of the feature and go on to grab his second PPMS victory in less than a week by a 2.109 margin. However, Dave Blaney (10) put the pressure on Flick (2) with about five laps remaining but Flick (2) was able to hang on for the win.

Tim Shaffer (45), from Aliquippa, would race his RUSH Late Model on Thursday night, and he would start P3, and quickly jump out to the early lead. Shaffer (45) would lead all 20 laps of the feature to pick up his first PPMS win of the season.

Stephen Shelpman (17P), from Pleasant Hills, would start on the outside pole for the Hobby Stocks on Thursday night and he would lead all 15 laps of the feature, picking up another win and keeping his perfect season alive.

On Saturday, PPMS would see seven heat races and five feature events. “Jammin” Johnny Mollick (4J), from Toronto, Ohio, came from his ninth-place starting spot to pick up his first win of the season for the Rohrich RUSH Late Models. Cody Koteles (65K), from Stockdale, got the win for the Hobby Stocks, as he was driving his dad’s car. Daryl Charlier (74), from Midway, got the win for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Tyler Cuneo (11) picked up the win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and Zoey Knight (78Z), from Plum, got her first win of the season for the All Ways Safe Young Guns.

The Rohrich RUSH Late Models would run two heat races with the top three from each heat entering the redraw for their 20-lap feature event. Frank Magill (05) would start on the pole for the feature with Cole Petrelle (184), from Follansbee, West Virginia, starting to his outside in second. When the green flag waved, the field wouldn’t get a lap completed before the first caution was out for the 60H of Brian Huchko who had a bad crash entering turn three. Huchko (60H) was okay, but his car was not and he would retire to the pits for the night. The field would line up and give it another try and Petrelle (184) would jump out to an early lead. However, F. Magill (05) would stay on his rear bumper and the duo would trade the lead a few times through lap three. At the end of lap four, Petrelle (184) and Magill (05) would fall off the pace slightly as they exited turn four which allowed Mollick (4J) to slip past them on the low side and take over the lead. Mollick’s lead over the field would increase with every passing lap, and by lap 10, he had a full straightaway lead over second place. Mollick (4J) would lead the remaining laps of the event, en route to his first Rohrich RUSH Late Model win of the season. He was followed by Petrelle (184) in second, Kassidy Kamicker (72B) in third, F. Magill (05) in fourth, and Philip Bubeck (4) would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Huchko (60H) and Petrelle (184).

In the Hobby Stock 15-lap feature, Jonathan Koteles (2K), from Stockdale, would start on the pole with Garrett O’Patchen (25), from Finleyville to his outside in second. At the start of the race, C. Koteles (65K) would jump out to an early lead with his brother Jonathan Koteles (2K) behind him in second, and Stephen Shlelpman (17P) in third. By lap three, C. Koteles (65K), and J. Koteles (2K), were side-by-side P1 and P2, and Shelpman (17P), and O’Patchen (25) would also run side-by-side P3-P4 respectively. J. Koteles (2K) and C. Koteles (65K) would trade the lead a few times through lap 10, and they also had younger brother, Logan Koteles (64K) now running in third, as O’Patchen (25) fell to fourth, and Shelpman (17P) fifth. C. Koteles (65K) would lead the remaining laps of the event and go on to pick up his first Hobby Stock win of the season. He was followed by L. Koteles (64K) in second, J. Koteles (2K) in third, O’Patchen (25) in fourth, and Shelpman (17P) in fifth. The heat race winners were Shelpman (17P) and O’Patchen (25).

13 Penn Ohio Pro Stocks would start their 15-lap feature and AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, would start on the pole. To his outside starting in second was D. Charlier (74). When the green flag waved, Poljak (36) would jump out to an earlier lead. Lap three saw the event’s first caution which would slow the pace and re-rack the field with Poljak (36) and Charlier (74) leading the restart. Charlier (74) would eventually take over the lead and start to distance himself from the field. He would lead the remaining laps in the event to pick up his first Penn Ohio Pro Stock win of the season. He was followed to the line by Poljak (36) in second, Cody Koteles (1K) in third, Jackson Billyk (5) in fourth, and Dale Tuche (310) would complete the top five. The heat race winners were Charlier (74) and C. Koteles (1K).

In the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinder 10-lap feature, Tyler Cuneo (11) would be the pole-sitter with Noah Bubeck (187) to his outside starting second. When the green flag dropped, Cuneo would come away with the lead. Cuneo (11) would lead through lap two when M. Knight (71) would take it away from him on the next lap. Cuneo (11) and Knight (71) would pass the lead back and forth for the next six laps, and as they were coming to the checkered flag, They got tangled up on the front stretch and Cuneo (11) crossed the line first. N. Bubeck (187) would finish second, Joe Campbell (40C) in third, Travis Corbin (2A) in fourth, and Ray Seibert (40) would round out the top five. The heat race winner was Noah Bubeck (187).

In the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns eight-lap feature, Zoey Knight (78Z) would start on the pole with Abby Gindlesperger (05) starting in second. Before the field could complete a lap, the yellow was out for a rollover crash in turn four. The driver was okay and once the field returned to green flag conditions, Z. Knight (78Z) would keep the early lead. From that point on, the race would go green to checkers in record fashion with Zoey Knight (78Z) picking up the win. She was followed by Gavin Kokolis (91) in second, Paige Jones (67) in third, Cheyenne Hollister (29P) in fourth, and Even Strouse (54) in fifth. The heat race winner was Sadie Snatchko (56).
