stephen shelpman wins the 2021 hobby stock invitational presented by jones motorsports

Imperial, PA (September 11, 2021)

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway was the scene for the Priority Equipment Rental Hobby Stock Invitational presented by Jones Motorsports on Saturday evening. With early fall in the air, PPMS would see qualifying, nine heat races, a six-lap dash, and six feature events. Stephen Shelpman (17S), from Pleasant Hills, would win the Hobby Stock Invitational to pick up his fourth win of the season. In Vintage Modified action, Mark Hahn (14), from Middletown, and John Marks (34), also from Middletown, would pick up the wins for the Modifieds and Sportsman respectively. Kyle Lukon (184), from Burgettstown, would get the win for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, while Brian Huchko (60H), from McDonald, would pick up win number four in the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature. Bill Tennant (2), from Colliers, West Virginia, would pick up another win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders, and Travis Clark (05T), from Pittsburgh, brought home the win for the All Ways Safe Young Guns.

Cody Koteles (1K), from Stockdale, would set the fast time in qualifying for the Hobby Stock Invitational with a time of 24.290. Shelpman (17S) was only 0.165 seconds behind C. Koteles (1K) with a time of 24.455. Less than a second would separate the top 12 Hobby Stock drivers during qualifying. Their qualifying times would determine their starting spots in one of three heat races. The top two from each heat race would redraw for the six-lap dash, which would determine the top six starting spots in their 20-lap feature.

In the Hobby Stock Invitational six-lap dash, Shelpman (17S) would start on the pole with Matt Benard (15), from Oakdale, starting to his inside in second place. Tony (5) and Frank (05) Magill, from Jefferson Hills, would start third and fourth respectively. C. Koteles (1K) would start in fifth, and Tyler Fox (39F), from Pittsburgh, would round out the six-car field. Shelpman (17S) would keep the early lead in the dash and with the event going caution-free, he would go on to win the dash, which ensured him as the pole-sitter for the 20-lap feature event.

In the 20-lap feature event, and with Shelpman (17S) on the pole, F. Magill (05) would line up to the inside in second place. The second row consisted of Benard (15) starting third, and C. Kotles (1K) starting fourth. T. Magill (5) would start fifth, and Fox (39F) would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag waved, Shelpman (17S) and T. Magill (05) would battle for the lead with Shelpman (17S) coming out on top by lap two and C. Kotles (1K) now in third. With Shelpman (17S) still leading the field, C. Koteles (1K) would pressure T. Magill (05) for second for several laps with T. Magill (05) holding down second place for now. Shelpman (17S) and the front-runners would enter lapped traffic on lap six, and on lap eight, C. Koteles (1k) would take over second place, knocking T. Magill (05) back to third. The event’s first caution would slow the pace on lap nine for Cody Tokarski (26T) when he spun out coming out of turn four. Shelpman (17S) would take the outside on the restart with C. Koteles (1K) to his inside, and T. Magill (05) in third, Fox (39F) in fourth, and Benard (15) in fifth. As fast as green replaced yellow, the yellow was back out for a car that spun out in turn four. Shelpman (17S) would again choose the outside on the restart with C. Koteles (1K) to his inside. Shelpman (17S) would again retain the lead with C. Koteles (1K) in tow at the halfway point of the event. The top five would remain the same through lap 15 when they would again enter lapped traffic. Benard (15) would pass Fox (39F) for fourth on lap 15 with T. Magill (05) in third, C. Koteles (1k) in second, and Shelpman (17S) leading the charge. The top five would remain the same as they took the white flag. Shelpam (17S) would lead all laps of the event to win the 2021 Hobby Stock Invitational. C. Koteles (1K) would finish second, F. Magill (05) third, Fox (39F) fourth, and then carnage would come as the rest of the field came to the line. In tight quarters, a car made contact with Benard (15) causing him to spin, which collected a few other cars. Jonathan Koteles (2K) would finish fifth, Chloie Jones (76) would finish sixth, T. Magill (5) would finish seventh, Joe Anthony (69X) would finish eighth, Ben Anton (13) would finish ninth, and Robert Betz (22) would complete the top 10. The heat race winners were Shelpman (17S), C. Koteles (1K), and F. Magill (05). The Fast Time Award Cody Koteles (1K), the “Hard Luck” award went to Matthew Miller (28), $111 to the 11th place finisher went to Cody Behanna (25), and the Hard Charger was Tom Anton (64) who started 22nd and finished 14th.

The PA Thunder on the Dirt Vintage Modified 15-lap feature would contain a race within a race. They have Modified and Sportsman-style cars which are separated by their carburetor type. Their feature lineup would start the Modifieds on the inside row and the Sportsman would start on the outside. Mark Hahn (14) would start on the pole with John Marks (34) to the outside. Their 15-lap feature would complete in record fashion with Hahn (14) taking the win for the Mods. Gene Wrightsman (10) would finish second, Fred Hildebrand (A) would finish third, Steve Longo (20) would finish in fourth, and Hank Coles (47H) would complete the field for the Mods. The Sportsman finish was Marks (34) in first, Dale Zimmer (21W) in second, Dave Philips (02) in third, and Tom Warburton (31) in fourth.

The Rohrich Rush Late Models had 15 cars signed in on Saturday evening. They were broken into two heat races with the top three from each heat making it into the redraw. Zach Gunn (17G), from McDonald, would start on the pole in their 20-lap feature. Cole Petrelle (84), from Follansbee, West Virginia, would start to the outside in second place. Zach Morrow (5X), from Gibsonia, would start in third, and Nico Dabecco (42), from Pittsburgh, would complete the top two starting rows. When their green flag dropped, Gunn (17G) would take the early lead. But, as the field was completing lap one, a six-car pile-up would happen in turn four. All over the drivers were okay but some of the cars were not. Gunn (17G) and Petrelle (84) would lead the restart and Petrelle (84) would take over the lead when the field returned to green flag conditions. That lead was short-lived as Lukon (184) came from his fifth starting spot to take over second and then first on lap three. The event’s final caution would come on lap six when Ben Policz (14B) spun out, but kept going, and dumped antifreeze on the track. With the fluid cleaned up, Lukon (184) and Petrelle (84) would again lead the restart. With 14 laps to go, Lukon (184) would keep the lead. The next 14 laps would run caution-free and Lukon (184) would pick up another PPMS RUSH Late Model win. Petrelle (84) would finish second, Gunn (17G) third, Dabecco (42) fourth, Morrow (5X) fifth, Travis Justice (23) sixth, Kassidy Kamicker (72B) seventh, Tony White (27T) eighth, Policz (14B) ninth, and Dave Gobel (20G) would complete the top 10. The heat race winners were Lukon (184) and Morrow (5X).

The ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stocks had seven cars signed in on Saturday night. They had a single heat race and the top three from the heat would redraw for the top three starting spots in their 15-lap feature. Jacob Billyk (4), from New Castle, would start on the pole with Huchko (60H) to his outside in second. Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, would start in third, Bill Robertson (1B), from Washington, would start in fourth, Jackson Billyk (5), from New Castle, would start in fifth, Dale Tuche (310), from Cheswick, would start in sixth, and Joey Anderson (71) would complete the seven-car field. When the green flag dropped for their 15 laps, Huchko (60H) would take off with the early lead. Lap three had Huchko (60H) still leading, Kocuba (10) in second, Jacob Billyk (4) in third, and Robertson (1B) in fourth. The event’s first caution would come on lap three when Anderson (71) spun out in turn four. Huchko (60H) would choose the outside on the restart with Kocuba (10) to his inside. When green replaced yellow, Huchko (60H) would keep the lead with Kocuba (10) in tow. Another caution would come on lap eight when Robertson (1B) hit the wall in turn four. Huchko (60H) would again choose the outside on the restart with Kocuba (10) to his inside with seven laps remaining in the event. Huchko (60H) would again keep the lead and lead the remaining laps of the event to pick up his fourth win of the season. Kocuba (10) finished second, Tuche (310) in third, Jacob Billyk (4) in fourth, Jackson Billyk (5) in fifth, Anderson (71) in sixth, and Robertson (1B) rounded out the field. The heat race winner was Huchko (60H).

The Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders had seven cars signed in to Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile on Saturday night. They had a single heat race with the top three from the heat redrawing for the top three starting spots in their 10-lap feature. Kyle Janas (81), from Coraopolis, would start on the pole. Starting to his outside in second place was Tennant (2). Lucas Weaver (11W), from California, Pennsylvania, would start in third, Derek Quigley (65Q), from Roscoe, started fourth, Hemi Kineston (05) started fifth, and Justin Pellegrini (29P), from Finleyville, rounded out the six-car field, as Craig Rudolph (5R) did not start the feature. When the green flag waved, Tennant (2) would take off with the early lead. With Tennant (2) still leading, Weaver (11W) would take over second on lap three which knocked Janas (81) back to third. On lap four and with Tennant (2) still leading, Quigley (65Q) would take third away from Janas (81). The race would run caution-free and Tennant (2) would pick up another Four-Cylinder win. Weaver (11W) finished second, Quigley (65Q) in third, Janas (81) in fourth, Pellegrini (29P) in fifth, and Kineston (05) rounds out the field. The heat race winner was Tennant (2).

In the All Ways Safe Young Guns eight-lap feature, Cameron Hollister (44), from McDonald, would start on the pole. Travis Clark (05T) would start in second, while Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, would start in third, Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, started fourth, and Logan Koteles (5K), from Stockdale, completed the five-car field. When their green flag waved, Clark (05T) would have the lead on lap one. With Clark (05T) still leading on lap two, Hollister (44) was in second and L. Koteles (5K) was up to third. L. Koteles (5K) would take over second on lap three with Clark (05T) still leading. The race would run caution-free and Clark (05T) would lead all laps of the event to pick up his third Young Guns win of the season. L. Koteles (5K) finished second, Hollister (44) finished third, Snatchko (56) fourth, and Kokolis (91) rounded out the five-car field. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
