Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway
autograph night a success at ppms
Imperial, PA
A beautiful late July evening would bless race fans and drivers alike for Autograph Night at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile, as Mother Nature couldn’t have provided better weather on Saturday evening. Kids got to meet their favorite drivers, as well as, get their autographs, see their cars up close and personal, and receive candy and treats. Along with Autograph Night, PPMS would see seven heat races and five feature events.
Kyle Lukon (184L), from Burgettstown, was on a rail as he would pick up the win in the Rohrich RUSH Late Model Dirt Series Feature. Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would snag another win in the Priority Equipment Rental Hobby Stock Feature, while Todd Weldon (45), from Monogahela, would get his first win of the season in the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock Feature. April Tennant (2B), from Colliers, West Virginia, would pick up another win in the Four-Cylinder Division, and Logan Koteles (5K), from Stockdale, would continue his domination of the All Ways Safe Young Guns Division, picking up win number seven of the season.
After fans made their way back up to the grandstands, the Rohrich RUSH Late Model Dirt Series 20-lap feature would be the first feature to take to the track. 14 cars were signed in with the top four from each heat making the redraw. Tim Shaffer (45), from Aliquippa, would redraw number one and start on the pole. Daryl Charlier (114), from Midway, would start to his outside in second place. Zach Gunn (17G), from McDonald, would start in third, while Levi Crowl (5), from Clear Spring, Maryland, would start in fourth, Cole Petrelle (84), from Follansbee, West Virginia, would start in fifth, and Kyle Lukon (184L) would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag dropped, Charlier (114) would pull away with the early lead with Lukon (184L) following him into second place. A lap two caution would slow the pace when Shaffer (45) spun coming out of turn two and Ben Policz (14B) had nowhere to go and made contact with Shaffer (45). Charlier (114) would choose the inside on the restart with Lukon (184L) to his outside, and Z. Gunn (17G) in third, Crowl (5) in fourth, and Jake Gunn (14G) in fifth. When the field returned to green flag conditions, Z. Gunn (17G) stole the lead on the restart. Lap five had Z. Gunn (17G) still leading, Lukon (184L) in second, Charlier (114) in third, and J. Gunn (14G) in fourth. Lukon (184L) would make the pass for the lead on lap seven, knocking Z. Gunn (17G) back to second. Lukon (184L) would enter lapped traffic on lap 11 and by lap 12, he had a full straightaway lead over the field. Lukon (184L) was on a rail and would lead the remaining laps of the event to pick up another Rohrich RUSH Late Model Dirt Series PPMS win. He was followed to the line by Crowl (5) in second, Z. Gunn (17G) in third, Charlier (114) in fourth, J. Gunn (14G) in fifth, Petrelle (84), in sixth, Zach Morrow (48) in seventh, Bill Kessler (09) in eighth, Philip Bubeck (2) in ninth, and Tom Klein (77) would complete the top 10. The heat race winners were Lukon (184L) and J. Gunn (17G).
20 Priority Equipment Rental Hobby Stocks were signed in on Saturday evening. The top five from the two heat races would enter the redraw. Tony Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would redraw number one and start on the pole. Starting to his outside was Jonathan Koteles (2K), from Stockdale. John Cain (06), from North Versailles, would start in third while Cody Tokarski (26T), from Hickory, would start in fourth, Kayla McManus (00K), from Elizabeth, would start in fifth, and Frank Magill (05) would start in sixth. When the green flag waved, T. Magill (5) would keep the lead. On lap four and with T. Magill (5) still leading, his brother F. Magill (05) was already behind him in second, ninth-starting Cody Koteles (1K) was already in third, and Cain (06) was in fourth. The event’s first caution would come on the very next lap when the leader, T. Magill (5) spun coming out of turn two which collected Cain (06) and Chloie Jones (76) as well. T. Magill (5) was done for the night while Jones (76) and Cain (06) would drive to their pit stalls with only Cain (06) returning to tag the field. F. Magill (05) and C. Koteles (1K) would lead the restart and F. Magill (05) would keep the lead. On lap seven, F. Magill (05) was still leading, C. Koteles (1K) was still in second, McManus (00K) in third, and J. Koteles (2K) in fourth. Another caution would come on that same lap seven, as the 57 of Ken Heasley Jr. would spin out coming out of turn four. The field would reset with Heasley Jr (57) tagging the field. On the restart, a lap wouldn’t be completed as J. Koteles (2K) would come to a stop between turns one and two. F. Magill (05) would take the outside on the restart with C. Koteles (1K) to his inside in second, McManus (00K) in third, Matt Benard (15) in fourth, Ben Anton (13) in fifth, and Joe Anthony (69X) in sixth. When the field returned to green, F. Magill (05) would keep his lead with C. Koteles (1K) in tow. C. Koteles (1K) stayed on the leader’s rear bumper and kept trying to take over the lead but F. Magill (05) was able to hold him off and go the distance, picking up another PPMS Hobby Stock win. He was followed to the line by C. Koteles (1K) in second, McManus (00K) in third, Ben Anton (13) in fourth, Matt Benard (15) in fifth, Cain (06) in sixth, Anthony (69X) in seventh, John Hollister (121) in eighth, Cody Behanna (25) in ninth, and Tokarski (26T) rounding out the top 10. The heat race winners were T. Magill (5) and McManus (00K). Notables: Matt Benard (15) started eighteenth after a bad crash in his heat race and he finished fifth in the feature. Ben Anton (13) started twelfth and finished fourth. John Hollister (121) started nineteenth and finished eighth. John Cain (06) was forced to tag the field in last place after the lap five caution and he finished sixth.
The ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stocks would have nine cars signed in with one heat race. The top four from the heat race would make the redraw. Jacob Billyk (4) would be the pole-sitter after the redraw. Brian Huchko (60H) would start in second while Todd Weldon (45) would start in third, Pete Loria (11C) would start in fourth, Zack Stehle (00) would start in fifth, Tanya Charlier (21) would start in sixth, and Nick Kocuba (10) would complete the seven-car starting field for the 15-lap feature, as Jackson Billyk (5) and Noah Brunell (18) both did not start in the feature. When the green flag dropped, Weldon (45) would have the lead at the line on lap one. Before lap two was complete, the caution was out for a car that was spun out between turns one and two with a flat tire. Weldon (45) would choose the inside on the restart with Huchko (60H) in second, Billyk (4) in third, and Loria (11C) in fourth. When the field returned to green flag conditions, the caution was out again as fast as the green flag waved when Loria (11C) hit the wall going into turn one. The field would reset and give it another try. Weldon (45) would keep his lead on the restart with Kocuba (10) right behind him as he went from fourth to second by the exit of turn two. Another caution would slow the pace for a car spun in turn two. Weldon (45) and Kocuba (10) would lead the restart and Kocuba (10) would steal the lead from Weldon (45) when the green flag waved. Weldon (45) would then regain the lead on lap six with Kocuba (10) falling back to third by lap seven with Huchko (60H) between them in second. The second half of the race would be caution-free and Weldon (45) would go the distance, picking up his first ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock win of the season. He was followed to the line by Huchko (60H) in second, Kocuba (10) in third, Billyk (4) in fourth, Stehle (00) in fifth, T. Charlier (21) in sixth, and Loria (11C) in seventh. The heat race winner was Huchko (60H).
The Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders would have 10 cars signed in with one heat race. The top four from the heat would make the redraw. Lucas Weaver (11W) would redraw pill number one and be the pole-sitter for their 12-lap feature. John Gill (19G) would start to his outside in second place. April Tennant (2B) would start in third and Travis Corbin (42) would complete the top two starting rows. When the flagman dropped the green, Gill (19G) would take off with the early lead. Gill (19G) would lead until lap three when he was passed by Weaver (11W) but Gill (19G) would regain the lead on the next lap. The event’s lone caution would come on lap five for debris on the track. Gill (19G) would choose the outside on the restart with A. Tennant (2B) to his inside in second, Weaver (11W) in third, and Bill Tennant (2) in fourth. When the field returned to green flag conditions, A. Tennant (2B) would take over the lead with her husband B. Tennant (2) following her into second place, Gill (19G) now in third, and Weaver (11W) in fourth. A. Tennant (2B) would lead the remaining laps of the event to pick up another PPMS Four-Cylinder win. She was followed to the line by B. Tennant (2) in second, Gill (19G) in third, Weaver (11W) in fourth, Matt Kiesel (3K) in fifth, Corbin (42) in sixth, Jacob Wiser (53) in seventh, Craig Rudolph (5R) in eighth, and Derek Quigley (65Q) in ninth. Preston Cope (29P) was a DNS for the feature. The heat race winner was A. Tennant (2B).
The All Ways Safe Young Guns Division has been growing all season. The Young Guns had seven cars signed in on Saturday evening. They usually run a feature only due to a low car count but they got to run a heat race on Saturday. The top four from the heat race would enter the redraw for the top four starting spots in their 10-lap feature. Despite Logan Koteles (5K) winning the heat race and making the redraw, he was forced to start in last place because he has been winning almost every week and just dominating the division. Cameron Hollister (44) would start on the pole with Emmerson Laboon (14) starting to his inside in second place. Kiersten Chernik (5X) would start in third while Travis Clark (05) would start in fourth, Gavin Kokolis (91) would start in fifth, Sadie Snatchko (56) would start in sixth, and L. Koteles (5K) would round out the seven-car field. When the green flag dropped, Hollister (44) would keep the early lead. Lap two had Hollister (44) still leading, Clark (05) in second, and L. Koteles (5K) already up to third. L. Koteles (5K) would take over the lead at the end of lap two beginning lap three. The event’s lone caution would slow the pace on lap five when a car was spun out on the back-chute. L. Koteles (5K) would take the outside on the restart and he would keep his lead with Hollister (44) in second, and Laboon (14) in third. L. Koteles (5K) would lead the remaining laps of the race to pick up his seventh All Ways Safe Young Guns win of the season. He was followed to the line by Hollister (44) in second, Clark (05) in third, Laboon (14) in fourth, Kokolis (91) in fifth, Snatchko (56) in sixth, and Chernik (5X) in seventh.
