The "Real Deal" Don O'Neal wins the 31st Annual Pittsburgher 100

The 31st Annual Pittsburgher 100 is in the books, after an amazing weekend of racing at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile. The action started on Friday night with qualifying, 10 heat races, two dashes, and four feature events. Saturday saw the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Pittsburgher 100, which had qualifying, four heat races, two b-mains, and the big 100 lap a-main event. Saturday also saw 2 b-mains for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series and the 40-lap Bill Hendren Memorial. The RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series featured the 2nd Annual Betsy Kriegisch Memorial. The “Real Deal” Don O’Neal (5), from Martinsville, Indiana, got the win in the 100-lap main event for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. After Jonathan Davenport (49) led most of the event but he ran out of fuel with only a handful of laps remaining. Kyle Lukon (184), from Burgettstown, won the 40-lap Bill Hendren Memorial after John Mollick (60M), from Toronto, Ohio, led most of the event but had to enter the pits for an unknown issue. Lukon (184) won all of the big RUSH Late Model Dirt Series races this season at PPMS, such as the Jook George Steel City Classic. Garrett Krummert (10S), from Ellwood City, dominated the 25-lap 2nd Annual Betsy Kriegisch Memorial and took home the w. Robbie Scott (5Z), from Shinnston, West Virginia, won the non-qualifiers race for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series. 

On Friday, John Mollick (60M), from Toronto, Ohio, would win the dash for the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series Bill Hendren Memorial and Garrett Krummert (10S), from Ellwood City, would win the dash for the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series Betsy Kriegisch Memorial, ensuring both of them the pole position in their a-main features on Saturday night. Logan Zarin (1Z), from Moon Township, would pick up the win in the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series One to Remember 15-lap feature on Friday night. Todd Weldon (45), from Monongahela, took home the win in the PPMS Pro Stock feature, while Stephen Shelpman (17S), from Pleasant Hills, snagged another win in the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock Feature. Kevin Criswell (44) picked up the win in the Open Four Cylinder feature and Noah Bubeck (2) scored his first career victory in the Young Guns division. 

In the 100-lap Pittsburgher 100, Jonathan Davenport (49), from Blairsville, Georgia, started on the pole and would pull out to an early lead when the green flag waved. The event’s first caution would come on lap six for debris in turn two. Davenport (49) would lead the restart with Hudson O’Neal (71) in second, Shannon Buckingham (50) in third, Don O’Neal (5) in fourth, and Jimmy Owens (20) in fifth. Davenport (49) would keep the lead on the restart and he would lead through lap 15 when the second caution would come out for more debris in turn two. The restart had Davenport (49) leading the field with H. O’Neal (71) in second, Buckingham (50) in third, D. O’Neal in fourth, and Owens (20) in fifth. When the field returned to green-flag conditions, Davenport would keep the lead, as he was on a rail, and would continue to lead through lap 25 when he would enter lapped-traffic. Another yellow would come on lap 26 slowing the pace. Davenport (49) would lead the charge on the restart and when green replaced yellow, Davenport (49) would again, keep the lead. Around the halfway point, another caution would come out as the 20 of Owens would spin coming off of turn four. Davenport (49) would lead the restart, and when the green flag waved, Davenport (49) would keep his top spot. With Davenport (49) still leading the field, another caution came on lap 55. Davenport (49) again, led the restart and by lap 61 D. O'Neal (5) made his way up to second place. Davenport (49) led almost all 100 laps of the event but trouble would strike the Blairsville, Georgia naitive, as he ran out of fuel with less than 10 laps remaining in the 100 lap event. Davenport (49) was forced to pit which gave the lead to D. O’neal and he took full advantage of it. D. O’Neal would lead the remaining laps in the event, enroute to his second Pittsburgher 100 win in the past three attempts. O’Neal used the late-race restart to pull away from a hard-charging Earl Pearson Jr.(1) to pick up the 46th Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of his career. “Man, I needed this win bad. We have had a good car over the last month. I am pumped! Our car was better on the long green flag runs. I thought I could get by Jonathan a couple of times late in the race. I tried to make him [Davenport] run a little bit harder than he wanted to and I wanted him to know I was there. My car kept wanting to die on the last caution, so I am glad the race ended when it did.” Pearson (1) was pleased with his well-earned finish. “We had a pretty good run tonight. We struggled all night before the feature and changed a lot on the car after the b-main. We are proud that all of our hard work paid off. The track was racy, and you could move all around it. Congratulations to Don on the win. It’s pretty crazy how these 100 lap races turn out sometimes with the veteran guys running up front.” Tim McCreadie (39) charged back late in the race, after suffering a flat tire earlier in the race, to join O’Neal and Pearson on the Lucas Oil podium. “I don’t know what cut the tire down earlier in the race. My car was really crooked for the early part of the race and that was making it hard on the left rear. ONeal to the line was Pearson Jr. (1) in second, McCreadie (39) in third, Jimmy Owens (20) in fourth, Gregg Satterlee (22), in fifth, Tyler Erb (1T) in sixth, Billy Moyer Jr. (21) in seventh, Davenport (49) in ninth, and Hudson O’Neal (71) rounds out the top 10. Heat race winners were Shannon Buckingham (50), Davenport (49), Michael Norris (72), and H. O’Neal (71). 

In the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, 40- lap Bill Hendren Memorial, John Mollick (60M) started on the pole after winning the six-lap dash. To his outside and starting in second was 2019 points champion Ben Policz (14B), from Rices Landing. The second row consisted of Garret Paugh (03), from Elkins, West Virginia, in third and Kyle Lukon (184) in fourth. When the green flag waved, Mollick (60M) would pull out to an early lead. The event’s first caution would come only six laps into the event when a car had trouble in turn four. Mollick (60M) would lead the restart with Policz (14B) in second, Paugh (03) in third, Lukon (184) in fourth, and Ryan Frazee (11F) in fifth. Mollick (60M) would keep the lead when green replaced yellow and the field got back up to speed. Zach Gunn (17G), from McDonald, would hit the outside wall on the front stretch on lap 12, bringing out the red flag, which eventually changed to yellow. Once the super snuffers got the mess cleaned up, Mollick (60M) would lead the field on the restart and again, would keep the lead. Mollick (60M) would lead the field late into the race when the bad luck bug that has bitten him all season struck again and he was forced to enter the pits, which paved the way for Lukon (184). Lukon (184) took over the lead late in the race and would lead the remaining laps of the event, en route to another PPMS win for the Burgettstown native. Following Lukon to the line was his teammate, Alex Ferree (184X) in second, Paugh (03) in third, Eddie Carrier Jr. (13N) in fourth, Frazee (11F), in fifth, Policz (14B) in sixth, Mike Duritsky (90J) in seventh, Tommy Schirnhofer (8S) in eighth, Jake Gunn (14G) in ninth, and Logan Zarin (1Z) rounded out the top 10. The heat race winners from Friday were Policz (14B), Mollick (60M), Paugh (03), and Carrier Jr. (13N). 

The 2nd Annual Betsy Kriegisch Memorial for the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series had Garrett Krummert (10S) starting on the pole for the 25-lap event after he won the four-lap dash on Friday evening. Tony Tatgenhorst (63T), from Columbiana, Ohio, started to the outside in second place. Jim Rasey (32), from Southington, Ohio, started in third, and Kole Holden (2), from Tiona, completed the top two rows. When the green flag dropped, Krummert (10S) would take the early lead over the field. With Krummert (10S) still leading on lap 10, Chas Wolbert (C3), from Howland, Ohio, made his way to the front of the pack and would challenge Krummert (10S) for the lead. Despite multiple attempts by Wolbert (C3), Krummert (10S) was able to shut the door on him and dominate the event, which ended in record fashion, going green to checkered. Krummert (10S) led all 25 laps, picking up another PPMS victory. He was followed to the line by Wolbert (C3) in second, Tatgenhorst (63T) in third, Rob Kristyak (00) in fourth, Rasey (32) in fifth, Holden (2) in sixth, Jessica Kriegisch (63) in seventh, Jacob Jordan (28J) in eighth, Kyle Martell (8M) in ninth, and Greg Porter (25) rounded out the top 10. The heat race winners from Friday were Krummert (10S) and Holden (2). 

Completing the night on Saturday was the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series non-qualifier race. Robbie Scott (5Z) would start on the pole, while Levi Crowl (5) would start to his outside and in second place. Bill Kessler (09), from Freedom, would start in third, and Jamie Wrightsman (21J), from Cortland, Ohio, would complete the top 2 rows. When the field came under green flag conditions, Crowl (5) would take the early lead but it was short-lived as Scott (5Z) would take over the lead by the end of the first lap. Lap four had Scott (5Z) still leading, Crowl (5) in second, Wrightsman (21J) in third, Kessler (09) in fourth, and Chuck Bowie (14C) in fifth. Scott (5Z) had a full straightaway lead by lap seven, as he dominated the event. Scott (5Z) led all 10 laps, en route to his first PPMS victory of the season. He was followed to the line by Wrightsman (21J) in second, Crowl (5) in third, Kessler (09) in fourth, Bowie (14C) in fifth, and Eric Hamilton Jr. (33X) completed the six-car field. Zachary Kane (10), Paul Jablonski (3JX), Brian Goebel (12G), Bryan Hoffman (15H), Chad Sines (15), Daryl Charlier (42S), and Colton Flinner (48F) all had a DNS. 

On Friday, in the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series One to Remember feature, Josh Stoica (22J), from New Cumberland, West Virginia, started on the pole. Bob Schwartzmiller (28S), from Coraopolis, started to the outside in second place. This was Schwartzmillers (28S) first appearance of the 2019 season. Zach Kane (10), from Washington, started in third and to his outside was Logan Zarin (1Z) starting in fourth. When the green flag waved, Stoica (22J) would keep an early lead but the caution was out on the first lap for a car that spun in turn three. Stoica (22J) took the inside on the restart and when the green flag dropped, the caution was back out for another car that spun out in turn two, which would require a complete restart. When the field returned to green-flag action, Stoica (22J) would keep the lead once again with Zarin (1Z) in second, and Schwartzmiller (28S) in third. Zarin (1Z) would steal the lead on lap seven with Stoica (22J) now in second, and Schwartzmiller (28S) still in third. Zarin (1Z) had a full straightaway lead by lap seven and would dominate the remaining laps of the event, picking up the victory. He was followed to the line by Stoica (22J) in second, Schwartzmiller (28S) in third, Zach Gunn (17G) in fourth, Bill Kessler (09) in fifth, Chad Sines (15) in sixth, Zach Kane (10) in seventh, Bryan Hoffman (15H) in eighth, Paul Jablonski (3JX) in ninth, and Brian Goebel (12G) would round out the top 10. Levi Crowl (5C) was a DNS.

In the PPMS Pro Stock feature, Brent McDonald (25M), from Saxonburg was the pole-sitter. Josh Langer (11), from Imperial, started to the outside and in second place, while Ryan Moyer (13X), from Portersville, started in third, and Daryl Charlier (112), from Midway, started in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Moyer (13X) and Weldon (45) would battle for the lead on the first lap and Weldon (45) would have the lead at the flag stand with Moyer (13X) in tow. The event’s first caution would come on lap five when AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, would hit the wall in turn four. Weldon (45) would take the outside on the restart and when the field returned to green flag conditions, it was short-lived, as the yellow was out again, for a car that had trouble in turn two. Again, Weldon (45) would take the high-side on the restart and keep the lead when green replaced yellow, Weldon (45) would keep the lead and go the distance to the checkered flag. Weldon (45) dominated the event, leading all laps, and picking up another PPMS victory. He was followed to the line by Charlier (112) in second, Moyer (13X) in third, Langer (11) in fourth, Mike Harris (18) in fifth, Ricky Wachter (47) in sixth, Heath Close (77) in seventh, McDonald (25M) in eighth, Zackery Stehle (00) in ninth, Brad Koteles (33K) in tenth, Bob Egley (30) in eleventh, and Poljak (36) rounded out the twelve-car field. 2019 points champion, Danny Rich (67X) was a DNS with a broken axle. The heat race winners were Weldon (45) and Langer (11). 

The Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock 15-lap feature had 2019 points champion, Stephen Shelpman (17S) starting on the pole. To his outside and starting in second place was Ben Anton (13), from Jefferson Hills. The second row consisted of Marcus Simmons (68X), from Beaver Falls, in third, and Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, started in fourth. With the green flag waving, Shelpman (17S) would keep the lead with F. Magill (05) now in second, and AJ Poljak (17P) now in third. On lap two, F. Magill (05) would try to steal the lead from Shelpman (17S) with F. Magill (05) trying the low-side and Shelpman (17S) staying on the high-side. Shelpman (17S) would shutdown F. Magill’s (05) attempt for the lead but F. Magill (05) would stay on Shelpman’s (17S) door. Shelpman (17S) continued to lead the field through lap seven when he would start to contend with lapped-traffic. The event’s first caution came on lap eight for a car that spun on the backstretch. Shelpman (17S) would choose the outside on the restart and bring the field back to green with F. Magill (05) right on his rear bumper. Another caution would slow the pace on lap 10 for oil on the racing surface. Shelpman (17S) would lead the field on the restart with F. Magill (05) still in second, Simmons (68X) in third, Cody Koteles (1K) in fourth, and Matt Bernard (15B) in fifth. When the field returned to green-flag conditions, it was short-lived, as the caution was out once again. Shelpman (17S) would lead the field on the restart for the final time and lead the remaining laps of the event, en route to another PPMS victory. He was followed to the line by F. Magill (05) in second, Poljak (17P) in third, Simmons (68X) in fourth, C. Koteles (1K) in fifth, Bernard (15B) in sixth, Kayla McManus (00K) in seventh, Tom Anton (313) in eighth, Andrew Sutton (16A) in ninth, and Jason Garchak (46) would complete the top 10. Karlee Kovacs (221K) and Jeff Cencarik (6) both had a DNS. The heat race winners were F. Magill (05) and Poljak (17P). 

The Open Four Cylinder feature had 11 starting cars and was the first paying Four Cylinder race of the season with $500 going to the winner. John Gill (19G), from Burgettstown, started on the pole. 2019 points champion Andy Garlinger (R88), from Hopedale, Ohio, started to the outside and in second place. Derek Isler (23B) started in third, and Bill Tennant (95), from Colliers, West Virginia, completed the top two rows. When the green flag dropped, Gill (19G) would keep the early lead, while Garlinger (R88) would fall back to fourth on lap one. Garlinger (R88) would charge towards the front of the field on lap two, as they would go three-wide into turns one and two. Garlinger (R88) would come out on top and take the lead at the end of lap two. Lap five had Garlinger (R88) still leading with Philip Bubeck (2L) now in second place behind him. Tanya Charlier (21) made her way into second place on lap nine and Young Guns driver, Tony Magill (05) was in third with Garlinger (R88) still leading the field. Trouble came on lap 10 for Garlinger (R88) who had to enter the pits with a broken axle. With the 2019 points champion now out of the race, Keven Criswell (44) was able to take over the lead. Criswell (44) would lead the remaining five laps of the event, picking up the win. He was followed to the line by P. Bubeck (2L) in second, Tennant (95) in third, Isler (23B) in fourth, Matt Weltz (717) in fifth, 81S in sixth, T. Charlier (21) in seventh, Tony Magill (05) in eighth, Garlinger (R88) in ninth, and Gill (19G) would round out the 10-car field. Wes Staley (73) was a DNS. 

In the Young Guns feature, Kyle Janas (88), from Coraopolis, started on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Noah Bubeck (2). 2019 points champion Susie Rudolph (55), from Steubenville, Ohio, rounded out the three-car field. When the field came under green-flag conditions, Janas (88) would keep an early lead but it was short-lived as N. Bubeck (2) made a charge to the front of the field and took over the lead. Rudolph (55) would eventually pass Janas (88) for second place, as she set her eyes on the leader. Despite a spirited effort by Rudolph (55), N. Bubeck was able to hold her off and pick up his first career victory. Following him to the line was Rudolph (55) in second, and Janas (88) in third.
