Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway
Ty Tilton dominates a stellar field of BOSS Outlaw Sprints at PPMS
Imperial, PA
It was a beautiful evening at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile when the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series came to town. With five regular divisions running, as well as the BOSS Sprints, PPMS would see nine heat races, six feature races, and two make-up features from May 5, 2018. John Mollick (60M) of Toronto, Ohio picked up the win in the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model Dirt Series make-up feature (from May 5). Ty Tilton (42) from Lima, Ohio took the win in the BOSS Sprint Car feature, and the “Midway Missile” Daryl Charlier (12C) would pick up his fifth win of the season in the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model feature. Greg Beach (33X) from Chicora took the win in the Pro Stocks May 5 make-up feature as well as winning the regular Pro Stock feature. Adam Ferree (29) from Jefferson Hills picked up the win in the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock feature, while John Gill (19G) from Pittsburgh would take the win in the Open 4’s feature, and Susie Rudolph (55) from Steubenville, Ohio would make it three in a row with another win in the Young Guns Feature.
In the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series 25-lap feature, Cole Ketcham (41) from Muncie, Indiana started on the pole. To his outside, and starting second was Bill Rose (6) from Plainfield, Indiana, while Jeremy Kornbau (27K) from Hermitage started in third, Joe Liguori (44L) from Tampa Florida started in fourth, Cody Gardener (9G) from Milford, Ohio started in fifth, and Kory Crabtree (77C) made up the top three rows. The first lap saw trouble when Bob McMillin (5) from Wampum flipped in turn three. McMillin (5) was ok but was forced to leave the race. The restart would remain the same as the field didn’t complete a lap before the caution came out. By lap three, Rose (6) would take the lead with Ketcham (41) falling back to second, while ninth starting Tilton (42) had already moved up to fifth. With Rose (6) still leading, Gardner (9G) would move into second place on lap nine, while Ketcham (41) fell to third place, and Tilton (42) was up to fourth place. Lap 12 saw trouble when Ketcham (41) hit the wall hard in turn one, bringing out the caution. With 13 laps to go the restart had Rose (6) leading the field, while Gardner (9G) remained in second, Carmen Perigo (21) was in third, and Tilton (42) was still in fourth. Tilton (42) would take over third place on lap 14 with Rose (6) still leading the field, and on the next lap, Tilton (42) would move into second, right behind Rose (6). Tilton (6) would take the lead on lap 17 and lead the remaining eight laps, en route to his first PPMS win of the season. He was followed by Gardner (9G) in second, Rose (6) in third, Crabtree (77C) in fourth, Brandon Matus (13) in fifth, Paul Dues (87) in sixth, Perigo (21) in seventh, Matt Cooley (19) in eighth, Kornbau (27K) in ninth, and Liguori (44L) rounded out the top 10. Crabtree (77C), Rose (6), and Gardner (9G) won the heat races.
In the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model 20-lap make-up feature, Ron Hall (01) would start on the pole. To his outside and starting second was Mollick (60M). Making up the second row was the 1ST of Christian Schneider from Burgettstown starting in third, and Zach Gunn (114G) from McDonald started in fourth, while Chuck Medved (2M) from Imperial started in fifth, and Jake Gunn (14G) from McDonald rounded out the top three rows. Hall (01) would take an early lead with Mollick (60M) in tow, but that wouldn’t last very long as Mollick (60M) would steal the lead from Hall (01) on lap three. On lap five Z. Gunn (114G) would enter the pits with an unknown issue and on the same lap, the yellow would come out when a car had trouble in between turns one and two. Mollick (60M) chose the inside on the restart, while Schneider (1ST) would be to his outside, and in second place, G. Gunn (14G) was in third place, Hall (01) fell to fourth place, and Zachary Kane (10) from Washington was in fifth place. Before the green came out, track officials spotted a problem with Fombell’s Colby Beighey (36B) as it appeared he had some broken left-rear suspension, causing the tire to rub on the body, and he was forced to leave the race. When the event would return to green, Mollick (60M) would resume his lead over the field, while J. Gunn (14G) and Schneider (1ST) battled behind him for second place. With Mollick (60M) leading, Schneider (1ST) would win the battle for second, putting J. Gunn (14G) in third, while Kane (10) would move into fourth, and seventeenth-starting Mike Reft (9R) from Whitehall was already up to fifth by lap eight. Reft (9R) would move up again on lap 11 when he moved into the fourth spot, with Mollick (60M) still leading. Reft (9R) would begin to put pressure on J. Gunn (14G) for the third spot on lap 12, and Reft (9R) would claim the third spot by the next lap. Mollick (60M) began to pick his way through lapped-traffic, allowing him to expand his lead over the field until the caution came out with four laps to go for the 1ST of Schneider who tagged the wall in turn two. Again, Mollick (60M) would choose the inside on the restart with Reft (9R) now in second, J. Gunn (14G) in third, Hall (01) in fourth, and Kane (10) in fifth. The field was under green for two more laps when the caution came out again, and on the restart, the top three would remain the same with points leader Justin Lamb (93X) now threatening from fourth place. When the green flag dropped, Mollick (60M) would take the lead once again and would lead the field to his first PPMS Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model victory of the season. He was followed to the line by Reft (9R) in second, Lamb (93X) in third, Hall (01) in fourth, Kane (10) in fifth, J. Gunn (14G) in sixth, Mike Duritsky (90J) in seventh, Josh Stoica (22J) in eighth, Logan Zarin (1Z) in ninth, and Medved (2M) made up the top 10. May 5 heat race winners were Mollick (60M) and Duritsky (90J).
In the pro stocks make-up feature, Beach (33X) started on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Robert Betz (81) from South Heights, while Bill Robertson (1B) from Upper Saint Clair started in third, and A.J. Poljak (36) from Baldwin rounded out the four-car field, as Dave McManus (114) from Elizabeth was a DNS. Beach (33X) would take an early lead with Robertson (1B) following him into second place, and Poljak (36) would move up to third place. Poljak was on the move again on lap three when he passed Robertson (1B) for second place. Robertson (1B) would get the second spot back on lap 11 when the 36 of Poljak was forced to go to the pits for an unknown issue. Beach (33X) was on a rail and would lap the third-place car of Betz (81) en route to his second PPMS win of the season, and second win in a row. He was followed by Robertson (1B) in second, Betz (81) in third, and Poljak (36) in fourth.
In the RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, Charlier (12C) would be the pole-sitter. Tom Schirnhofer (8) from Dormont would start to his outside in second, while Stoica (22J) would start in third, Kane (10) would start fourth, Zarin (1Z) would start fifth, and Brian Goebel (12G) would complete the top three rows. When the green flag dropped, Schirnhofer (8) would take the lead over Charlier (12C) on the first lap. Schirnhofer (8) would get into lapped-traffic on lap seven and would begin to pull away from Charlier (12C) and the rest of the field. Schirnhofer (8) continued to lead the field on lap 13 with Charlier (12C) in tow, while Hall (01) was in third, Stoica (22J) was in fourth, and Zarin (1Z) was in fifth. Lap 14 saw trouble when a car tagged the wall in turn two bringing out the event’s first caution and slowing the pace. Schirnhofer (8) chose the outside on the restart with Charlier (12C) to his inside in second, Hall (01) in third, Stoica (22J) in fourth, and Zarin (1Z) in fifth. Six laps would remain when the green flag dropped, and Schirnhofer (8) would take the lead once again, but it wouldn’t last long as Charlier (12C) would pass Schirnhofer (8) for the lead with four laps to go. It appeared that Charlier (12C) would lead the field to victory but on lap 19 the caution came out when a car struck the wall in turn three. On the ensuing restart, Charlier (12C) would choose the outside with Schirnhofer (8) to his inside, and in second place, with Hall (01) and Stoica (22J) in third and fourth place respectively, and Lamb (93X) now in fifth place. Since the caution happened with one lap to go the restart would now go to two laps. When the green flag dropped, it was a mad dash into turn one with Stoica (22J) diving to the low side, but he was stopped by Schirnhofer (8) who also took the low side. Charlier (12C) would retain the lead with one lap to go, but again, the caution came out, and the field was forced to a green, white, checkered restart once again. They would line up again and give the restart another try, but the caution was back out by turn one with Medved (2M) having car trouble at the turn one pit entrance. The lineup would remain the same on the restart, but if the field didn’t get a good green flag this time, track officials would force the field to a single-foul restart. That wouldn't be necessary and Charlier (12C) would finally lead the field to his fifth PPMS victory of the season. He was followed to the line by Schirnhofer (8) in second, Lamb (93X) in third, Nico Dabecco (F1) in fourth, Stoica (22J) in fifth, Hall (01) in sixth, Zarin (1Z) in seventh, Schneider (1ST) in eighth, Reft (9R) in ninth, and J. Gunn (14G) made up the top ten. The heat race winners were Kane (10), Charlier (12C) and Schirnhofer (8).
In the Pro Stocks 15-lap feature, Poljak (36) started on the pole. To his outside and starting second was Betz (81), while Robertson (1B) started in third, and Martin Spade Jr. (18S) started in fourth, making up the top two rows. Poljak (36) took an early lead in the event with Robertson (1B) following him into second by lap two, while sixth-starting Beach (33X) was already up to fifth, and then by lap five, Beach (33X) moved into fourth. Lap eight had Poljak still leading with Beach (33X) and Robertson (1B) battling for second behind him. Then on the next lap, Beach (33X) would steal the second spot from Robertson (1B). Beach (33X) would take the lead from Poljak (36) on lap 12 and lead the field to his third PPMS win of the season and second feature win of the night. He was followed by Poljak (36) in second, Robertson (1B) in third, Spade Jr. in fourth, Eric Piotrowski (7) in fifth, Betz (81) in sixth, Gary Koteles (64K) in seventh, and McManus (114) rounded out the eight-car field. The heat race winner was Beach (33X).
In the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock 12-lap feature, Randy DeBerdinis (121) started on the pole. Starting in second was Karlee Kovacs (221K) from Carnegie, while Justin Shipley (47) made his first appearance of the season and started in third, and Casey Grumling from Elrama started in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Kovacs (221K) took an early lead, but seventh-starting Adam Ferree (29) from Jefferson Hills would take the lead on lap two knocking Kovacs (221K) back to second. With Ferree (29) still leading, a battle for second was taking place behind him between Kovacs (221K) and Grumling (77X). Kovacs (221K) would retain the second spot on lap five with Ferree (29) leading the field. On the next lap, DeBerdinis (121) would pass Grumling (77X) for third, with Kovacs (221K) in second, and Ferree (29) still leading. Ferree (29) would lead the remaining four laps picking up his first PPMS win of the season. Following him to the line was Kovacs (221K) in second, Grumling (77X) in third, S. Shelpman (17S) in fourth, Dave Sheriff (8) in fifth, Justin Shipley (47) in sixth, Matt Bernard (15B) in seventh, E. Shelpman (17P) in eighth, Ben Anton (13) in ninth, and DeBerdinis (121) rounding out the top 10. Heat race winners were Ferree (29) and Grumling (77X)
In the Black Label Business Center Open 4’s eight-lap feature, Mike Kelly (6K) started on the pole. Starting to his outside and in second was Zachary Eisler (05), while John Gill (19G) from Pittsburgh started in third, Mark Allen Tringes Jr. (47) started in fourth, and Tom Anton (64) from Jefferson Hills rounded out the five-car field. When the green flag waved, it didn’t take Gill (19G) very long to take the from Kelly (6K). The PPMS veteran would lead the field to his first Black Label Business Center Open 4’s feature of the season. He was followed to the line by Tringles Jr. in second, Kelly (6K) in third, Eisler (05) in fourth, and T. Anton (64) in fifth. The Open 4’s did not run a heat race.
In the Three Rivers Karting Young Guns feature, Kyle Janus (88) from Coraopolis started on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Frank Magill (05) from Jefferson Hills, while Susie Rudolph (55) from Steubenville, Ohio rounded out the three-car field. When the green light came on, Janus (88) would take an early lead, but Rudolph (55) would take the lead from him on lap two. On the same lap, Magill (05) went to the pits on his own with car trouble before track officials were going to disqualify him for contact and rough driving in a no-contact division. With Magill (05) now out of the race, it would be a two-car shootout between Rudolph (55) and Janus (88). Rudolph (55) was leading at the halfway point when she got out of control and spun out in turns three and four. On the restart, Janus (88) was now in the lead with Rudolph (55) beside him in second. When the green flag dropped, Rudolph (55) easily took the lead from Janus (88), en route to her third PPMS win of the season. She was followed by Janus (88) in second, and Magill (05) in third. Young guns did not run a heat race.
