Norris dominates the twelfth annual Red Miley Rumble
July 14, 2018 Red Miley Rumble for immediate release
Imperial, PA
With the mercury climbing, it was another barn-burner at PPMS for the twelfth annual Red Miley Rumble when the Ultimate Northeast Super Late Models came to town. With Jared Miley (10) of Pittsburgh winning the Herb Scott Memorial back on June 30, 2018, he would be one of the favorites, but with names like Alex Ferree (4) from Saxonburg, Michael Norris (72) from Sarver and Ross Robinson (7R) from Georgetown, Delaware, he would have his work cut out for him. Norris (72) set the fast time during qualifying with a time of 19.468. Michael Maresca (7MM) was a close-second with a time of 19.526, a 0.058 second difference.
During the 35-lap Red Miley Rumble feature, Maresca (7MM) started on the pole. To his outside, starting second, was Norris (72). Making up the second row was Ferree (4) in third and Robinson (7R) in fourth. Matt Costner (66C) from Ridgeley, West Virginia started in fifth, and Kyle Lee (2T) from Mercersburg started in sixth, Tommy Beck (91) from Sewickley started in seventh, Ryan Montgomery (12) from Fairmont, West Virginia started in eighth, Matt Lux (111) started in 9th, and Colton Flinner (4T8) from Allison Park rounded out the top ten. When the green flag dropped, Norris (72) would take the lead from Maresca (7MM) on the first lap of the event. By lap six, Ferree (4) had moved into second behind Norris (72), while Maresca (7MM) had fallen to third, Montgomery (12) was up to fourth, and Costner (66C) was in fifth. The top five would remain the same through lap ten with Lee (2T) in sixth, and fifteenth-starting Tony Musolino (36) in seventh. On lap 15, and with Norris (72) leading, Maresca (7MM) was on Ferree’s (4) bumper, trying to steal the second spot from him, but Ferree (4) would keep his second spot, Maresca (7MM) would remain in third, Montgomery (12) in fourth, and Lee (2T) moved up to fifth. The event’s first caution happened on lap 19, slowing the pace. The restart would have Norris (72) still leading, Ferree (4) in second, Maresca (7MM) in third, Montgomery (12) in fourth, Lee (2T) in fifth, Costner (66C) in sixth, Flinner (4T8) in seventh, Miley (10) in eighth, Robinson (7R) in ninth, and Jake Gunn (7G) in tenth. When the green flag dropped, the field wouldn't even complete a lap before the caution was out again for Miley (10) who spun out in turn three. The top five would remain the same on the restart. Lap 24 saw trouble again when Montgomery (12) would spin out in turn two. With 11 laps to go, the restart had Norris still leading, Maresca (7MM) in second, Ferree (4) in third, Robinson (7R) in fourth, Lee (2T) in fifth, Gunn (7G) in sixth, Flinner (4T8) in seventh, Jon Hodgkiss (69) in eighth, Costner (66C) in ninth, and Derek Stefanick (65) would round out the ten cars remaining in the race. Norris (72) led the entire race, enroute to his third Red Miley Rumble victory of his career and his first PPMS victory of the season. He was followed to the line by Ferree (4) in second, Robinson (7R) in third, Maresca (7MM) in fourth, Lee (2T) in fifth, Flinner (4T8) in sixth, Costner (66C) in seventh, Hodgkiss (69) in eighth, Gunn (7G) in ninth, and Stefanick (65) would round out the top ten. Norris (72) and Maresca (7MM) won the heat races.
In the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature, the “Midway Missile” Daryl Charlier (12C) started on the pole, looking for his fourth PPMS victory of the season. Starting to his outside in second was Zachary Kane (10) from Washington. Making up the second row and starting third was Christian Schneider (1ST) from Burgettstown, and starting fourth was Chuck Medved (2M) from Imperial. When the green light came on, Charlier (12C) would retain the lead. With Charlier leading, lap four saw a three-car battle for third place as Kane (10), Ben Policz (14B), and Nico Dabecco (F1) went three-wide into turn two. Dabecco (F1) would come out with the third spot, while Kane (10) was in fourth, and Policz (14B) in fifth. Points leader Justin Lamb (93X) from Findlay Township was on the move after starting ninth and would take the sixth spot from Medved (2M) on lap five. Charlier (12C) was still in the lead on lap seven, with Schneider (1ST), Dabecco (F1), Policz (14B), Kane (10), and Lamb 93X in second through fifth place respectively, while thirteenth starting Mike Reft (9R) from Whitehall was on the move, and already up to sixth. Reft (9R) would steal the fifth spot from Lamb (93X) on lap nine with Charlier (12C) still leading the field. Lap thirteen would see trouble when Jabo Jablonski (3J) from Carnegie would crash on the backstretch, hitting one of the safety tires, and bringing out the red flag. Jablonski (3J) was ok after a very hard hit, but his car was not in good shape. The restart had Charlier (12C) choosing the high side in first place, Dabecco (F1) was in second place, Kane (10) was in third place, Reft (9R) was in fourth place, and Lamb (93X) was in fifth place. Charlier (12C) would lead the entire race, picking up his fourth PPMS win of the season. He was followed to the line by Dabecco (1F) in second, Reft (9R) in third, Lamb (93X) in fourth, Schirnhofer (8) in fifth, Logan Zarin (1Z) in sixth, Policz (14B) in seventh, Medved (2M) in eighth, Schneider (1ST) in ninth, and Bill Kessler (09) completed the top ten. The heat race winners were Dabecco (F1) and Policz (14B).
The RUSH Sportsman Modified 15-lap feature had Tony Tatgenhorst (63T) as the pole-sitter. To his outside starting in second was Chas Wolbert (C3) from Howland, Ohio. The second row was made up of Garrett Krummert (10S) from Ellwood City starting third, and 2017 points champion Kole Holden (2) from Tiona starting in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Tatgenhorst (63) would lead the field until lap two when Krummert (10S) would take over the lead. The caution came out on the same lap when Jeremy Weaver (35W) had car trouble. The restart would have Krummert (10S) leading, while Wolbert (C3) was in second, Holden (2) in third, Tatgenhorst (63T) in fourth, and Brian Schaffer (41) from Slippery Rock in fifth. When the green light came on, Krummert (10S) would retain the lead, and Holden (2) would move up to second, knocking Wolbert (C3) down the third. Lap seven and lap nine would see more cautions with one car spinning out and the other one hitting the wall. During the lap nine caution, Brandon Michaud (132) from Medina, Ohio was forced to tag the field after being flagged for rough driving. Krummert (10S) would lead the remaining six laps of the event, picking up his third PPMS win of the season. He was followed by Brandon Ritchey (17) in second, Holden (2) in third, Wolbert (C3) in fourth, Rocky Kugel (83) in fifth, Schaffer (41) in sixth, Chelsie Kriegisch (10) in seventh, Tatgenhorst (63T) in eighth, Jordan Ehrenberg (JD57) in ninth, and Michaud (132) in tenth. The heat race winners were Krummert (10S) and Wolbert (C3).
In the Pro Stocks 15-lap feature, Greg Beach (33X) of Chicora started on the pole. To his outside, and starting second was Eric Piotrowski (7) from Evans City, while Martin Spade (18) started in third, Dave McManus (114) from Elizabeth started in fourth, Bill Robertson (1B) from Upper Saint Clair started in fifth, Tyler Deitz (27) started in sixth, Andrew Kostelnik (36K) from Jefferson Hills started in seventh, Cam Kraisinger (47) from Mount Pleasant started in eighth, and Heath Close (77) from Shaler rounded out the nine car field. With Beach (33X) leading on lap one, McManus (114) shot up to second, knocking Piotrowski (7) down to third. Robertson (1B) made his way to third, and Kraisinger (47) followed him into fourth place on lap four. Beach (33X) started to pick his way through lapped-traffic by lap 10 enroute to his first PPMS win of the season. He was followed to the line by McManus (114) in second, Robertson (1B) in third, Kraisinger (47) in fourth, Deitz (27) in fifth, Piotrowski (7) in sixth, Spade (18) in seventh, Kostelnik (36K) in eighth, and Close in ninth. The heat race winners were Deitz (27) and Robertson (1B)
In the Keystone Coach Works Hobby Stock 12-lap feature, Randy DeBerdinis (121) was the pole-sitter. Starting to his outside and in second was Ed Shelpman (17P) from Pleasant Hills. The second row consisted of Tyler Fox (39F) from Pittsburgh starting in third, and Stephen Shelpman (17S) from Pleasant Hills starting in fourth, while Ben Anton (13) from Jefferson Hills started in fifth, last week’s winner Casey Grumling (77X) from Elrama started in sixth, Matt Bernard (15B) started in seventh, Joe Anthony (221K), subbing for Karlee Kovacs, started in eighth, Andrew Sutton (16A) started in ninth, Frank Fazio (1ST) started in tenth, and Kayla McManus (14) from Elizabeth rounded out the 11 car field. When the green light came on, the field went three-wide into turn one with S. Shelpman (17S) coming out on top. Lap three saw the first caution when B. Anton (13) blew his motor, leaking oil onto the track and spinning out low in turn one. The restart would have S. Shelpman (17S) in first, Fox (39F) in second, DeBerdinis (121) in third, E. Shelpman (17P) in fourth, and Anthony (221K) in fifth. Lap five saw trouble again when DeBerdinis (121) hit the wall in turn four, bringing out the event’s second caution. S. Shelpman would lead the field on the restart with Fox (39F) in second, Anthony (221K) in third, E. Shelpman (17P) in fourth, and Bernard (15B) in fifth. Lap eight saw the third caution when a car spun out in turn two. S. Shelpman (17S) was in first on the restart with Fox (39F) still in second, Anthony (221K) still in third, E. Shelpman (17P) still in fourth, and Bernard (15B) still in fifth. S. Shelpman had an awesome start when the green flag dropped, but the restart was called back by track officials and Fazio (1ST) was forced to tag the field after being docked for passing before the cone and for rough driving. On the restart, only four cars would remain in the race, S. Shelpman (17S) in first, Fox (39F) in second, Anthony (221K) in third, and Sutton (16A) in fourth. With S. Shelpman (17S) leading the entire race, it would appear that he would continue his winning streak, but Fox (39F) would pass S. Shelpman (17S) on the last lap, coming out of turn four to pick up his first PPMS win of the season. Fox (39F) was followed by Anthony (221K) in second, S. Shelpman (17S) in third, E. Shelpman (17P) in fourth, Sutton (16A) in fifth, Bernard (15B) in sixth, Fazio (1ST) in seventh, DeBerdinis (121) in eighth, B. Anton (13) in ninth, K. McManus (14) in tenth, and Grumling (77X) in eleventh. S. Shelpman (17S) and Grumling (77X) won the heat races.
In the Black Label Business Center Open 4’s eight-lap feature, Justin Clark (02) from Pittsburgh started on the pole, while Tom Anton (64) from Jefferson Hills started to his outside in second. The “Dominator” Andy Garlinger (R88) from Hopedale, Ohio started third and rounded out the field. When the green flag dropped, Garlinger (R88) was in first place by the end of the first straightaway with Clark in second (02) and T. Anton (64) in third. The field would remain the same for all eight laps with Garlinger (R88) picking up his sixth win of the season. Clark (02) came in second, and T. Anton (64) came in third. The Open 4’s did not run a heat race.
Susie Rudolph (55) from Steubenville, Ohio was looking to pick up where she left off last week after she won her first PPMS Three Rivers Karting Young Guns Feature. Rudolph (55) was starting third behind second-starting Frank Magill (05) from Jefferson Hills, and the pole-sitter was Kyle Janus (88) from Coraopolis. On lap two, Rudolph (55) passed F. Magill (05) taking over second place, and knocking F. Magill (05) down to third place. Rudolph (55) was pushing Janus (88) for the lead on lap three, and by lap four she would take over the lead. Rudolph (55) would lead the remaining four laps, picking up her second career PPMS victory and second win in a row. She was followed to the line by Janus (88) in second, and F. Magill (05) in third. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
