Matus takes the win over Palker

Jack Sodeman Jr. (23JR) of North Jackson, Ohio set the fast time during qualifying, but Brandon Matus (13) of Wampum had other plans during the 20-lap feature for the “Outlaw” Winged 410 Sprints. Dennis Wager (38) started on the pole with Andrew Palker (57X) to his outside. The second row had George Hobaugh (40) on the inside starting third, and to his outside starting fourth was Matus (13), while Sye Lynch (42) of Apollo rounded out the top five. When the green flag dropped, Palker (57X) took the lead, followed by Matus (13) in second, Hobaugh (40) retained third place, Dan Kuriger (08) of New Brighton moved up to fourth, while pole-sitter Wager (38) fell back to fifth. The leader, Palker (57X), was already into lapped traffic on the fifth lap. Sodeman (23JR) moved into fourth after starting sixth as he followed Kuriger (08), who moved into third on lap ten, and then Sodeman (23JR) swapped spots with Kuriger (08) on the next lap. The 23C of Gerald Harrhogan spunout in turn four, triggering the event’s lone caution and slowing the pace on lap fourteen. The single file restart had Palker (57x) in first, Matus (13) in second place, Sodeman (23JR) in third, Kuriger (08) in fourth, and Lynch (42) in fifth. When the green came out, Matus (13) took the top spot from Palker (57X) who fell to second, while Sodeman (23JR) remained third, and Lynch took the fourth spot from Kuriger (08), who fell to fifth. With the checkered flag waving, Matus (13) picked up his first PPMS win of the season. He was followed to the line by Palker (57X) in second, Sodeman (23JR) in third, Lynch (42) in fourth, and Kuriger (08) in fifth, while Gary Kriess Jr. (55) finished sixth, Hobaugh (40) finished seventh, David Jones (76) finished eighth, Darren Gallagher (12) finished ninth, and pole-sitter Wagner (38) rounded out the top ten. Kriess (55) and Sodeman (23JR) were the heat race winners.

 

Last week’s winner Garrett Krummert (10S) of Ellwood City started on the pole in the 15-lap RUSH Sportsman Modified feature. Brian Sadler (5) of Apollo was on the outside starting second, while the C3 of Chas Wolbert from Howland, Ohio started third. 2017 champion Kole Holden (2) of Tiona was starting fourth, and Jeff Schaffer Jr. (4S) started fifth. On the first lap, Krummert (10S) retained the lead while Wolbert (C3) and Sadler (5) swapped spots for second and third respectively, and Holden (2) fell to fifth, allowing Schaffer (4S) to move into his fourth starting spot. On the second lap, David Kalb Jr. (11J) of Aurora, Ohio took the fifth spot, causing Holden (2) to fall to sixth. On lap four, Kalb (11J) moved up another spot to fourth, causing Schaffer (4S) to drop to fifth, then on lap five they would swap spots again. There was a caution on lap eight when the 51 of Larry Couch spun out low in turn four. With Krummert (10S) still leading the pack he chose the inside on the restart with Wolbert (C3) in second, Sadler (5) in third, Schaffer (4S) in fourth, and Kalb (11J) in fifth. When the green flag dropped, Krummert (10S) had a textbook start keeping the lead. In tow was Wolbert (C3) still in second, Schaffer (4S) moved up to third, Holden (2) up to fourth, Brian Shea (14S) moved into fifth, and Sadler (5) began to fall off the pace after running in the top five most of the race. Krummert (10S) would lead the field to his second win of the season and second win in a row, while Wolbert (C3) finished second, Schaffer (4S) third, Holden (2) fourth, Shea (14S) fifth, Kalb (11J) sixth, Steve Slater (29) seventh, Chelsie Kreigisch (10) eighth, Brian Schaffer (41) ninth, and Sadler (5) rounded out the top ten. Tony Tatgenhorst (6E) and Krummert (10S) picked up the heat race wins.

 

The “Midway Missile” Daryl Charlier picked up where he left off last week in the Diehl Automotive RUSH Late Model 25-lap Summer Sizzler feature. Colby Beighey (36B) of Fombell started on the pole with Russ Matejka (17M) to his outside. The second row was made up of Daryl Charlier (12C) of Midway in third with the 14B of Ben Policz from Rices Landing to his outside in fourth, and 2017 champion Justin Lamb (93X) of Findlay Township started fifth. On the second lap, Policz (14B) moved into second place behind Beighey (36B) with Matejka (17M) falling to third. Christian Schneider (1ST) of Burgettstown moved up to sixth on lap three, knocking Charlier (12C) down to seventh. On the next lap, Lamb (93X) moved up to third behind Beighey (36B) and Policz (14B) who were running first and second respectively, while Schneider (1ST) was running fourth, and Charlier (12C) fifth. Lap four saw Charlier (12C) take the fourth spot from Schneider (1ST), knocking him back to fifth. Policz (14B) stole the lead from Beighey (36B) on lap seven with Lamb (93X) third, Charlier (12C) fourth, and Schneider (12C) fifth. Lap nine saw more changes when Lamb (93X) took the second spot from Beighey (36B) knocking him to third with Charlier (12C) on his doorstep in fourth and Schneider (1ST) fifth. Charlier (12C) moved up again on lap eleven when he took the third spot from Beighey (36B). Lap fifteen saw lapped traffic when Charlier (12C) took the second spot from Lamb (93X), forcing him to third, Schneider (1ST) in fourth, and Matejka (17M) moved into fifth, knocking pole-sitter Beighey (36B) out of the top five. With five laps to go, the event’s lone caution slowed the pace as Logan Zarin (1Z) came to a stop in turn one with an unknown problem. Policz (14B) chose the inside on the restart with Charlier on the outside in second, Lamb (93X) in third, Schneider (1ST) in fourth, Matejka (17M) in fifth, and John Mollick (60M) of Toronto, Ohio in sixth. When the green flag dropped, it didn’t take the “Midway Missile” very long to take the lead from Policz (14B). Charlier (12C) would lead the field to his third win of the season and third win in a row. Following him to the line was Policz (14B) in second, Lamb (93X) in third, Schneider (1ST) in fourth, Mike Reft (9R) in fifth, Matejka (17M) in sixth, Mollick (60M) in seventh, Jabo Jablonski (3J) in eighth, Josh Stoica (22J) in ninth, and Ron Hall (01) in tenth, making up the top ten. Heat race winners were Policz (14B) and Charlier (12C)

 

Jim Thompson (82) of West Sunbury started on the pole in the 12-lap Super 6 Late Model feature. To his outside, starting in second, was Curtis Stivason (36) of Marion Center. Making up the second row, starting in third, was Mike Spinneweber (6) of Butler, and Cole Petrelle (7) of Weirton, West Virginia started in fourth. On the first lap, sixth starting Levi Spinneweber (10) of Butler took the lead with Frank McFeaters (1) of Butler, following him to second after starting last. M. Spinneweber remained in third, while Thompson (82) fell to fourth, and Petrelle (7) in fifth. Petrelle (7) pressed Thompson (82) for fourth place on lap four, and Petrelle (7) took fourth on the sixth lap when Thompson (82) briefly got out of control. L. Spinneweber (10) would lead the field to the checkered flag, picking up his first win of the season. He was followed to the line by McFeaters (1) in second, M. Spinneweber (6) in third, Petrelle (7) in fourth, Stivason (36) in fifth, Thompson (82) in sixth, Ed Dunkle (34) in seventh, and Nathan Mechling (4) in eighth. L. Spinneweber won the heat race.

 

Stephen Shelpman (17S) of Jefferson Hills continued to dominate in Hobby Stock action, winning both the regular 12-lap feature and the make-up 10-lap feature from May 5. The make up feature had Shelpman on the pole with Casey Grumling (77X) of Elrama to his outside in second, Adam Ferree (29) starting third, Karlee Kovacs (221K) of Carnegie in fourth, and Adam Kostelnik (17P) starting fifth. On the first lap, Shelpman (17S) took off like a rocket while Ferree (29) took the second spot from Grumling (77X), knocking Grumling (77X) back to third, Kovacs remained fourth, and seventh-starting Ben Anton (13) of Jefferson Hills moved up to fifth. On lap four, Ferree (29) began to press Shelpman (17S) for the lead, but Shelpman held his spot. On the next lap, B. Anton (13) moved into third knocking Kovacs (221K) back to fourth while Adam Kostelnik (17P) took over the fifth spot. Ferree (29) took the lead from Shelpman (17S) on lap seven and they would battle back and fourth for the remainder of the event. With the checkered flag waving, Ferree (29) was in the lead coming off of turn four with Shelpman (17S) beside him as they would drag race to the finish line. After a photo finish Shelpman (17S) picked up the win by 0.032 seconds, giving him his third win of the season and third win in a row. Ferree (29) came in a close second, B. Anton (13) third, Kostelnik (17P) fourth, Kovacs (221K) fifth, Matt Bernard (15B) sixth, and second-starting Grumling (77X) finished seventh after pulling into the pits on lap seven.

 

In the regular Hobby Stock 12-Lap feature defending Young Guns champion B. Anton (13) started on the pole with Ferree (29) on his outside in second, Grumling (77X) started third, Kovacs (221K) fourth, Bernard (15B) fifth, and Shelpman (17S) started last. On lap one Ferree (29) took the lead, followed by Grumling (77X) in second. On lap two, Shelpman (17S) was already up to second place with Grumling (77X) in third, Kovacs (221K) in fourth, B. Anton (13) in fifth, and Bernard (15B) in sixth. Lap five saw the first caution when Grumling (77X) tagged the wall on the front stretch, flattening a right side tire which forced him to stop between turns one and two. Ferree (29) chose the inside, Shelpman (17S) outside in second, Kovacs (221K) in third, B. Anton (13) in fourth, and Bernard (15B) was in fifth. When the green flag dropped, Shelpman took the lead, but on the same lap, the caution came back out as B. Anton (13) spun out. The lineup remained the same on the restart, and, once again, Shelpman (17S) claimed the lead with Ferree (29) in second, Kovacs (221K) in third, B. Anton (13) in fourth, and Bernard (15B) in fifth. The third caution came out on lap nine when Bernard (15B) spun out in turn four. Shelpman (17S) chose the outside on the restart with Ferree (29) in second, Kovacs (221K) in third, B. Anton (13) in fourth, and Bernard (15B) in fifth. When the green light came on, Shelpman (17S) began to pull away as Ferree’s (29) car fell on it’s face, knocking him all the way down to fifth. Shelpman (17S) would lead the field to the finish, picking up his fourth win of the season and fourth win in a row. He was followed by Kovacs (221K) in second, Ferree (29) made it back up to third, Bernard (15B) in fourth, B. Anton (13) in fifth, and Grumling (77X) in sixth. The Hobby Stocks did not run heat races.

 

Andy Garlinger (R88) of Hopedale, Ohio continued his domination of the Black Label Business Center Open 4’s. He won both the regular 10-lap feature and the 8-lap make up feature from May 5. Garlinger (R88) was on the pole in the make-up feature with John Gill (19G) of Burgettstown in second, and Tom Anton (64) of Jefferson Hills in third. They ran one, two, and three respectively for all eight laps. T. Anton (64) was forced to pull into the pits on lap five when his trunk came open. Garlinger (R88) picked up his third win of the season and third win in a row but he wouldn't stop there.

 

In the Open 4’s regular 10-lap feature, Gill (19G) started on the pole with T. Anton (64) of Jefferson Hills in second, and Garlinger (R88) in third. When the green flag dropped, Garlinger (R88) shot to first place by turn one and wouldn’t look back. He led all ten laps, picking up his fourth win of the season and fourth win in a row. Following him to the finish line was Gill (19G) in second place and T. Anton (64) in third. The Open 4’s did not run heat races.

 

In the Three Rivers Karting Young Guns 8-lap feature, Kyle Janus (88) of Coraopolis started on the pole with Susie Rudolph (55) of Stubenville, Ohio in second, Frank Magill (05) of Jefferson Hills in third, and Tony Magill of Jefferson Hills (44) in forth. Rudolph (55) took the lead on lap one with Janus (88) in second, F. Magill (05) in third and T. Magill (44) in fourth. On lap two T. Magill (44) went to the pits with an unknown issue. Janus (88) was pressing Rudolph (55) and took the lead on lap four. Rudolph (55) went to the pits on lap six with an unknown problem, but it was later determined that she ran out of fuel. Janus (88) picked up with win, followed by F. Magill (05).
