Tony Stewart Visits And Wins At PPMS

A large portion of the crowd in attendance on Monday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway came to see NASCAR Icon Tony Stewart in competition.  He did not disappoint his fans as he took the $5,000 victory in the 30 lap Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions event presented by Falconi’s Moon Township Automotive.  The event was held on Monday night, as it was quickly rescheduled after being knocked out by weather on Saturday.

Also picking up victories were John Mollick from Toronto, OH in the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, and Jessica Kriegisch of Ellwood City in the RUSH Modifieds.

With 27 entries, the fastest qualifier was Carson Macedo at 17.502.  Three qualifying heats were won by Tony Stewart, Caleb Armstrong, and Chad Kemenah.  Carl Bowser won the B-Main.  Carson Macedo and Tim Shaffer finished in the first two positions in the Dash, and led the 30 lap feature to the green flag.

Shaffer used the outside lane to lead from the start, over Macedo, Holtgraver, Kemenah, and Stewart.  Holtgraver passed Macedo for second on lap 2, as Shaffer pulled away in front.  Third was hotly contested as Stewart took fourth from Kemenah, before the first caution period came with 5 laps in for Jordan Mackison after he got into the outside wall in turn four.

Back to green, Shaffer continued to lead on the single file restart, but Stewart moved to second with a strong run in turn two.  Shaffer was unable to pull away this time, as Stewart, Holtgraver, Macedo, and Lee Jacobs closed in.  On lap 12 in race traffic, Stewart drove by Shaffer in turn two, but Shaffer got back by off the corner.  Stewart and Holtgraver made contact in turn two the next time by, with Holtgraver making contact with the wall to bring out the next caution with 13 laps in.  Stewart later called this his “mistake.”

Shaffer inched away when racing resumed, with Stewart in second ahead of a three way battle for third.  Jacobs then got fast on the inside lane, taking third and closing on Stewart for second.  Race traffic became an issue at lap 20, as Shaffer had his hands full with Stewart and the traffic.  On lap 22 while racing for the lead, Shaffer got caught up with traffic and ended up spinning to a stop to bring out the yellow flag.

Stewart inherited the lead for the restart over Kemenah, Macedo, Jacobs, and Ryan Smith.  Back to green for what would be the final time, Stewart blasted away from the field leaving the competition to race for second.  On lap 25, Macedo made a wild slide job to squeeze past Kemenah for second.  But Stewart would have no problem over the remaining laps, taking the win by 2.862 seconds over Macedo.  Jacobs had a strong run for third over Kemenah, who slowed at very end.  Ryan Smith had a solid run for fifth.  Carl Bowser advanced from 19th starting spot to get sixth, with Max Stambaugh, Brandon Matus, Justin Barger, and Caleb Armstrong rounding out the top ten.

The redraw for starting positions for the 20 lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Model main had Mike Pegher, Jr. and Greg Beach scheduled to lead the field to green, but Pegher’s car was unable to go and he eventually started from the tail after changing to Bill Kessler’s 09.  That moved Bob Schwartzmiller to the outside of row 1.  After a spin on the first attempt at a start, an incident at the drop of the green involved seven cars, with four unable to continue.  The third try for the start saw Justin Lamb from ninth on the grid and fourth on the restart split the front row cars and move into the lead at lap 1, before a debris caution slowed the pace.  Back to green, Lamb was strong in the lead until a lap 4 caution for a slowing Christian Schneider.  Lamb again controlled the restart, but the competition was coming as the drivers went four wide for third off of turn two and were charging to the front.  New York visitor John Waters moved up to second and swapped the lead with Lamb on lap 7, before finally making the pass to take the lead on lap 9.  Daryl Charlier had started tenth and passed Lamb for second on lap 14, but Waters had built up a comfortable advantage that was wiped out when the final caution period came with two laps remaining.  Waters and Charlier lined up side by side for the restart, and while racing for the lead they got very close in turn two and slightly slowed their momentum.  John Mollick, who was involved in the first lap incident and had made a pit stop, was in the right place at the right time.  Using the outside lane, he made a run and charged by both drivers and was able to take the race lead.  Mollick would score the win by 0.430 seconds over Waters, with Charlier third and Lamb fourth.  Mike Reft was fifth, with Beach, Michael Duritsky, Chuck Medved, Jabo Jablonski, and Russ Matejka filling the top ten.  Waters and Charlier were heat race winners.

In the 15 lap RUSH Modified feature event, it was all Jessica Kriegisch, as she drove to a 1.802 second victory in the non stop event.  Starting outside of Jim Bryce, she took the lead at the start and drove a flawless race in earning her first victory.  Kole Holden started fifth and advanced through the field to get second, taking fourth on lap 3 and third on lap 4.  He made an outside pass to get to second from heat race winner Steve Slater on lap 13, but settled for second as Kriegisch was way out in front.  Slater was third over Brian Sadler, and Chelsie Kriegisch.
