Diehl Automotive Super Late Models Return To PPMS
Racing action continues at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 10, as the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models return to headline the racing program. In a tune-up race for next week’s Herb Scott Memorial, the tire rule in place for the evening will be the one used by ULMS, which will sanction next week’s card. Also on the card will be a full program of racing for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, Sunoco Sportsman, Super6 Late Models, Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, and CruiseAmerica Open Fours. The Sprints will not be in competition as previously announced.
The Saturday, June 17 program will feature the running of the Fifth Annual Herb Scott Memorial, honoring the memory of the popular Pittsburgh area racing legend. It will be Race 1 of the Diehl Automotive Super Series, sanctioned by the Zimmer’s Service Center United Late Model Series. The Big Block Modifieds will make a special appearance, along with point racing for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models and Sunoco Sportsman. Also on the program will be the RUSH Modifieds.
The Diehl Automotive Super Late Models have competed in two events with John Mollick holding a four point lead over John Flinner, Jr. Nine points out of the lead in third place in the standings is Jon Hodgkiss, and just one point behind him are Tony Musolino and Matt Dobnak who are tied for fourth. Keith Barbara and Colton Flinner are the feature winners in 2017.
Daryl Charlier finished a close second to feature winner Mike Reft in last Saturday’s feature event for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, but did regain the point lead from Justin Lamb by two points. Defending champion John Mollick sits just three points behind Lamb in the point chase.
The Sunoco Sportsman class has a one point difference in the point standings, with defending champion Dave McManus leading A.J. Poljak. Last Saturday’s Sixth Annual Ed Laboon Memorial race drew 56 entries, and was won by Rusty Martz who earned $2517 for his winning drive.
The Super6 Late Models will return to competition this week for their third visit. Justin Koehler and Levi Spinneweber won the two previous events for the new division starting competition this season.
Casey Grumling leads Karlee Kovacs by five points in the Miley Truck Rental Hobby Stocks, as Dave Sheriff won Saturday’s feature event. The CruiseAmerica Open Four points have Matthew Rubright leading Tom Anton by six points, as Steve Settle won Saturday’s event over 11 entries.
It is a milestone week coming up for the Imperial Heights Garage Young Gun division. Started for teenage drivers in 2006 in four cylinder cars, the first race on April 16 that year was won by Rich Mason. Mason is an 11 time feature winner who served as the race director in the scoring tower until his recent job related move out of the area. This Saturday’s event will be event 200 in the history of the division. 39 different drivers have won in the 199 events held, led by Dusty Curry with 19 wins. Among the graduates on this list that have competed at the track this season are Todd Weldon with 12 wins, Mike Reft with 10 wins, Karlee Kovacs with nine wins, and Ricky Stigerwald with eight wins. Current drivers include current point leader Justin Clark, who has four straight wins having won all three features this season. Ben Anton, with a pair of feature wins, is second in points, 11 behind Clark. Third in points Kayla McManus finished second in last Saturday’s event, and may be the next to join the win list. Six time winner Michael Jackson has competed this season, but Kyle Janas has taken over the number 89 car.
Winners of five gallons of free Sunoco Racing Fuels from last week are Mike Reft in the RUSH Late Models, and Sportsman driver Rod Laskey. To be entered in each week’s drawing to win five free gallons of fuel, race teams need to purchase at least five gallons of fuel at the track to be eligible.
