Masse’s Grizzly Nationals Spoiled by Misfortune and Rain
Inside Line Promotions – BELGRADE, Mont. (July 16, 2019) – Misfortune and wet weather spoiled the Grizzly Nationals for Cody Masse last weekend at Gallatin Speedway, which hosted the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
“We had circumstances go against us on Friday and then we weren’t able to redeem ourselves on Saturday due to the rain,” he said. “It was a bit disappointing, but we won’t let one night of racing ruin what’s been a pretty good season for us so far.”
Masse’s Grizzly Nationals got off to a tough start on Friday when he drew the final starting spot in a stacked heat race.
“I hate to be the guy who complains about the draw, but we probably couldn’t have drawn worse for the heat race on Friday,” he said. “We started last in a heat race that had probably the two fastest guys in our region along with five national caliber guys, so it was pretty tough. But we were able to gain one spot from eighth to seventh and the others didn’t run away from us.”
Masse’s heat race finish slotted him in the eighth starting position in the B Main with the top six finishers transferring to the A Main.
“We got a really good start in the B Main and made it to fourth through the first set of corners,” he said. “But a car stalled on the track before the lap was completed and we had a complete restart. The second start wasn’t as good to us, but we did make it to the final transfer spot briefly before a couple of guys got by me. We had a caution with eight laps to go and I made some adjustments and was able to move up a position, but we ran out of time and weren’t able to make a challenge for the final transfer spot.
“It was frustrating and disappointing to come up one spot short of making the A Main. Our car was good enough to make it, but circumstances just didn’t fall our way. That said, we’ve had a lot of good luck with draws this year and the law of averages seems to be catching up to us the last couple of weeks.”
Masse drew the No. 1 heat race pill on Saturday before that night’s races were canceled because of rain.
“We went from the worst draw on Friday to the best draw on Saturday,” he said. “Not that it eventually mattered since it was cancelled, but Saturday night’s heat was stacked, too. But I’d rather start in front of a bunch of National Tour drivers and try to hold them off rather than have to try and pass them from the back.”
Masse plans to compete with the ASCS National Tour again this Friday and Saturday at Big Sky Speedway in Billings, Mont.
“This will be our first chance to race against the National Tour in Billings since they haven’t raced there in a few years,” he said. “Jerry and Shane seem to be doing a great job there with the track. Big Sky is a track where we don’t have a lot of experience, but we’ll certainly give it our best shot.”
