Great Start to the West Coast Swing

Brady Bacon – Second in Hartford!

(Bill W) July 13, 2011 – After some time to get ready for the trip to the Pacific Northwest with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series, Brady Bacon competed in a pair of events in Minnesota and South Dakota. The result was a fifth and second place finish amongst some good competition. He plans on running Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon tonight (Wednesday), may run on Thursday in Lebanon, Oregon and will hit Grays Harbor Speedway in Elma, Washington for this weekend’s Fifth Annual Fred Brownfield Memorial.

The weekend started with Friday’s $5,500 to win ASCS-Midwest vs. JSTS event at the Jackson Speedway in Minnesota. With plenty of heavy hitters in the house, Brady ran from fourth to second in his heat, qualifying him for the dash. “The dash draw didn’t go well (8th), obviously,” he says. “But we were able to drive to fourth in that.”

The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver started outside row two of the feature, and it took a while to get going. “We got caught a little tight in the beginning of that feature,” says Brady. “The track was a little weird. We made the wrong decision and we lost a couple of spots early on.”

Later in the going, he was able to work back into the top five. “We got up to sixth, but we were the same speed as the leaders,” he says. “We were able to get Tony Bruce back to get to fifth. We were catching Wayne (Johnson), Jason (Johnson), and Jack (Dover), but it was too late then. We were faster, but it was tough to pass for position.”

Still, the fifth place finish was a good way to get back on track. It was Brady’s first visit to Jackson and he found the track a bit tricky. “The straightaways were still tacky at the end of the night, and you were able to make up for a bad corner, because everyone was fast on the straight,” he explains.

The ASCS-Midwest series moved over to the bullring in Hartford, South Dakota on Saturday night. The I-90 Speedway saw a number of stars on hand. Brady started third in his heat, and was able to win that. After drawing a four for the feature, he had the Brady Bacon Racing #99 in position for a win. “We were able to jump to the lead on the first start, but the third place starter ended up crashing, so that brought it back,” he says. “That put Jason Johnson third, and we didn’t get as good of a start. We were able to get by the pole-sitter, Eric Lutz, and then we were able to get by Jason. He tried to take a left turn at us in the end, but we held him off.”

The second place finish was well-earned, as Brady made himself acquainted with the 3/8-mile oval. “We were able to get by lapped cars on the top of one and two, and we could run the middle to the bottom in three and four,” he says of his strategy. “It was definitely racy still.”

He spoke of his chase of leader, Wayne Johnson. “I could get to Wayne, but it seemed when I was about five car lengths back, it stayed that way. The track was very good around the bottom, but it carried a lot of speed still.”

A busy week lies ahead. “We’re planning on Cottage Grove, and depending on how it goes, we may run on Thursday (Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon),” says Brady. “Then we’re back with ASCS on Friday and Saturday at Elma.”
