Amantea Battles for USAC East Coast Sprint Cars Podium Early at Winchester Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – WINCHESTER, Va. (Sept. 19, 2022) – Joey Amantea was in contention for a podium performance last Saturday at Winchester Speedway, where he drove a car owned by Lou Ciconni during the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars event.

“Every time we’ve had a wreck or something that would put me out Lou has offered a car,” he said. “Every other time we’ve figured something out. In this situation we took it. He told us to do whatever we want with the car so we got it more customized to me, but everything was still different. It was my first time running a Ford and a different frame so everything was new to me.”

It worked well early as Amantea charged from eighth to third place in a heat race.

“We were an absolute rocketship in the heat race,” he said. “The track conditions were fantastic all night. You could run the bottom, but we were all ripping the top.

“Come feature-time I started sixth and quickly worked my way up to third. I was getting into a rhythm. We chose a harder right rear tire compound for the way I drive and we were worried the track would rubber up. It took a couple of laps for that to come in, but once the tire came in we were racing for third. On the straightaway a driver checked up. I was planning on throwing a slider on him. I had a huge run on him and had nowhere to go. I got into the back of him, bounced off the wall and kept going, but the car was really damaged. We ended up just pulling in, which was a shame because I think we could have won.”

Amantea was credited with a 17th-place finish.

“I want to thank Lou for the offer and my team for the hard work,” he said.

Amantea plans on racing his micro sprint this Friday at Linda’s Speedway in Jonestown, Pa.
