Inside Line Promotions – PARK CITY, Kan. (April 3, 2018) – Johnny Herrera improved throughout the 8th annual Park City Cup/Air Capital Shootout last weekend at 81 Speedway, where he capped the NCRA Series event with a runner-up result.

The two-day event began on Friday with Herrera placing second in two heat races. That locked him into the 11th starting position in the main event.

“We were good enough to make the show,” he said. “We lost a spot or two on the start and then we passed a couple. We just maintained. We weren’t good enough to drive by people. The rubber probably came in around Lap 6 or Lap 7. By Lap 10 you didn’t want to miss it.”

Herrera ended with an 11th-place result.

“We were a lot better on Saturday,” he said. “We made a bunch of changes. We changed our car quite a bit. We were good in hot laps so we had confidence going into the heat race and that’s half the battle. The car felt really good. I could put it where I wanted to put it. I didn’t have to drive it where it wanted to go. I had to slide around the first few laps to get to second place. Then I settled down and tried to make good laps.”

Herrera maneuvered from sixth to second place in the first half of the heat race. He then tracked down the leader and executed a slide job in turns one and two on the final lap to earn the heat race victory. Herrera entered the A Main with the second-most points recorded and therefore started on the outside of the front row.

“I knew going in that whoever got to the front first was going to win,” he said. “The start was major. We made the decision if we can’t make the jump and get the position into turn one I had to get down. Blake (Hahn) had a little jump. I was immediately looking to get down to fall in behind him. You didn’t want to get stuck on the outside. We went to conserve-mode and rode.”

The bottom groove was caked in rubber before the race started and once Herrera realized he wasn’t going to take the lead he dropped to the bottom lane. Herrera ran second for the entire race to garner his first podium finish of the season.

The team will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, for the Tony Stewart Presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com.

“I always seem to run well there so I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I’ve only had one win there, but I’ve run second a couple of times and had some thirds. It’s been a successful track for us.”
