Shaun Miller Dominates Carl Billet Memorial at BAPS
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Shaun Miller knows that when he is leading a race at BAPS Motor Speedway, the battle up front could turn into a family affair.
That’s because Miller’s father, Troy, the defending speedway champion, is in the field and lurking. And it was the case again during the Carl Billet Memorial.
This time, the son was a little better than Dad. The younger Miller won a tight battle in the 30-Lap Creekside Auto Sales Limited Late Model main event to claim the prestigious event.
“I saw him dive under me a few times,” Shaun Miller said. “As long as I kept a good, smooth line, I didn’t think anybody was going to get me. The only time I had any issues was around the lapped cars, but we’re here, and that’s all that matters.
“I never actually did get a chance to see [Carl Billet] race. I’ve heard he was one of the greats down here, and this is definitely my biggest win or biggest paying career win. I’m just glad to put my name on there with a bunch of those guys.”
Shaun Miller grabbed the early lead, but he had his pace stopped on Lap 3 when Terry Gingrich spun on the backstretch. The restart was also dicey because of an incident with Matt Murphy, Kyle Saylor, and Brandon Eveler.
Over the next seven laps, Troy Miller went after his son. He followed in his tracks and even took the lead on the 11th circuit. Shaun Miller was having none of it and retook the top spot one lap later.
This turned into a three-car battle for the win when Jed Latshaw disposed of Devin Frey and entered the mix. The top three negotiated lapped traffic over the final half of the event, with Shaun Miller fighting off three caution periods and the competition to score the victory by .479 seconds.
“The lapped cars definitely made it difficult,” Shaun Miller said. “Other than my Dad, I didn’t really see anyone else. I’m sure all the keyboard warriors are out there on Facebook, beating them keys, baby.”
Troy Miller, Latshaw, Frey, and Chase Billet completed the top five. Travis Mease stormed from 24th to sixth. Shaun Miller set quick time for the 25-car field early in the night with a lap of 19.302. Frey, Troy Miller, and Chuck Shutz won heat races.
In the Mason Dixon 270 Micro Sprint Car Series event, Mike Rutherford outlasted a strong field of cars and three caution periods to claim the 20-Lap main event.
Brian Marriott led the first two circuits before Rutherford made his move to the front. Once the veteran took over the lead, he was never challenged the rest of the way in polishing off another victory.
Cory Myers, Nicholas Skias, Toby Blumenshine, and Adrian Shaffer completed the top five. Thanks to added sponsorship for the event, a total of $3,250 cash and awards were given away in addition to the purse.
Seth Kearchner topped a field of 31 cars and captured the 20-Lap Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends presented by Baker Door Company feature.
Bill Diehl led the first five laps before Kearchner took his turn at the front. He never looked back and took the win by a mere .322 seconds over Stephen Wurtzer. Big Diamond feature winner Landen Lewis, Diehl, and Chris Transeau rounded out the top five.
The Extreme Stock main event was shortened to 12 laps after hitting the 20-minute mark. Austin Hogue led the final three laps and claimed the win.
Doug Hoffman led the first circuit, with Austin Hogue leading the next six laps. Andrew Hogue took over on Lap 8, but Austin Hogue was back out front for good on the 10th circuit and won by .768 seconds.
In Limited Stock action, Travis Brown topped Terry Hartlaub in a thriller to win the 15-Lap feature event.
Hartlaub led the first four laps. Brown made his move on Lap 5, but he couldn’t shake his pursuer and could only muster a margin of victory of .163 seconds. Robbie Carroll, Matt Worley, and Brandon Hoffner completed the top five.
