Frankie Herr Takes Super Sportsman Win #2 at BAPS Motor Speedway

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Frankie Herr had to take evasive action when the Super Sportsman main event went green at BAPS Motor Speedway Saturday night.

A huge 10-car melee took place in Turn 1. Four cars flipped, and Herr, who started 15th, was struggling to see as cars scattered trying to dodge the carnage.

Instinct took over. Herr went to the extreme bottom of the speedway and came through without a scrape. That moved him up in the starting order, and he took advantage of it and won the 25-lap BAPS Super Sportsman main event.

“I guess on that start, I was at the right place at the right time,” Herr said. “I was tight on the bottom, and I saw the melee and down as far as you can get. I knew I was out of harm’s way, thank goodness.

“It was a little hard to see starting 15th on the start. The hot rod was working, and I knew when we got to start up front a little further, she was rolling the corners pretty sweet. I was pretty sure we had something for them at the end.”

The race went green, and four cars suffered significant damage in the incident. Point leader Kenny Edkin, Scott Dellinger, Luke Deatrick, and Daniel John got upside down. They were OK. The other drivers involved rejoined the race at the back of the field.
Bobby Hockenberry started on the outside pole and grabbed the lead at the start. His pace was slowed on Lap 2, when Craig Morrow slowed with motor problems between Turns 3 and 4.

The restart was much like the opening laps of the race. Hockenberry led the way with Chase Gutshall settling into second.

Herr was into the top five and challenging Gutshall for second on the sixth circuit. The Carlisle, Pa., driver made the pass for the position in Turn 1 and ripped past Hockenberry coming out of Turn 4 to complete the lap.

“Those guys got crossed up going through three and four, and Donny had this thing driving straight as an arrow,” Herr said. “I said, ‘They are in trouble.’

“We have been doing our homework pretty hard. I told Bill [Devine] two weeks ago, ‘I’m telling your right now, when we come back, you are going to see everything changing except for the color and the number.’ We changed a lot.”

Those changes have worked. There were two more cautions over the race distance, but nothing was stopping Herr on this night.

Herr drove away from the field and went unchallenged in collecting his second win in the last three weeks by .973 seconds, which was a smaller margin because of a late caution. He has two wins at BAPS Motor Speedway this season.

“I can’t ask for a better car owner,” Herr said. “Bill has been superb as a car owner, and I really enjoy racing for this Bill Devine Racing Team. His family, grandson, and daughter ... they put forth a lot of effort, just like the Mennonite Mafia, Kay, Donny, and just a whole bunch of guys, my dad, my uncle.

“Gary from Fastener’s Specialties, he’s a great friend. You can’t ask for a better guy than him. We’ve been friends since the early 90s. Dale Henry, he supported us with motors when we had our own team, and he is helping Bill. He is a great one, and I’m glad I met him in 2004.”

Gutshall settled for second in teh final rundown. Matt Ondek, Steve Fannasy, and 20th-place starter Mike Enders completed the top five.

Daulton Bigler wired the field to capture the 20-lap Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event.

Bigler and Travis Mease were side-by-side at the start, and it stayed that way through the opening circuit. Bigler, of Mechanicsburg, nosed ahead, but the two remained in a tight battle on Lap 2 before the first caution.

On the restart, it was all Bigler. He was able to open up a 1.487-second lead by the completion of Lap 7. Meanwhile, Chase Billet, who started fourth, cleared Mease to take over second.

Billet was able to cut into the lead and was also aided by two cautions. None of it mattered, as Bigler was too strong in clean air and took his second win of the season by 1.053 seconds.

Ben Whitaker started third and finished there. Troy Miller and Wayne Pfeil completed the top five.

In the prestigious Frankie’s Used Auto Parts/Mike’s Towing Street Stock 40, Brian Walls posted one of the most dominating wins in the event’s history.

Will Walls led the opening two circuits before Brian Walls took the lead going through Turn 3 on Lap 3. Once out front, the Gettysburg driver put on a speed clinic in winning the non-stop event by a gaudy 12.475 seconds.

The event was run in just over under 15 minutes. Will Walls was second, followed by Jim Palm, Jasen Geesaman, and Greg Diehl.

It was a wild Superior Homes Extreme Stock main event, but it was former 410 Sprint Car driver Austin Hogue taking the win in the 20-lap event.

Donnie Broderick led the four first laps before Patrick McClane took over and led through Lap 13. Andrew Hogue slipped into the lead on Lap 14, but McClane wrestled it back one lap later.

Austin Hogue, who started third, took his turn at the front on Lap 17, and he never looked back in taking his second win of the season. Andrew Hogue was second, followed by Ronnie Buck, Jordan Fulton, and John Wright.
