Frankie Herr Claims Super Sportsman Bounty with 1st Victory of 2020 at BAPS
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: When the big money is on the line in Super Sportsman competiton, Frankie Herr is usually near the front.
It’s been that way throughout his career. The Carlisle, Pa., driver has made a career of winning high-profile races in the division.
Saturday’s event was a regular show, but it had a little more zest. There was a $750 bounty in place to anyone who could beat Kenny Edkin, who has won the first three shows at the speedway this season, on top of the regular winner’s share.
You just knew Herr was looking for a little more cash in his pocket, and he didn’t disappoint. He rushed to the front and held off Edkin late to score the win in the 25-lap feature.
“I kind of like money,” Herr said. “We’ve been working to get faster, and we’re getting onto something. I thought tonight we were going to be good, and I guess we showed that a little bit.
“There are a lot of good racers here, though, and you can’t make a mistake. When the car owner tells you that you are getting a nice percentage if you get it done, you get up in the seat and elbows up a little bit.”
Troy Rhome lined up on the pole and took the lead at the start. He had his pace slowed on Lap 2, when Chase Gutshall took a nasty flip in Turn 1 and Rhome got upside down. Both drivers were okay.
Dave Hollar assumed the lead on the next restart as the race behind him began to unfold.
Herr, who started 10th on the grid, methodically made his way to the front. Once he got to second, he had to work to chase down Hollar, who built a good lead.
But Herr has been in this position before, while Hollar is still new to it. The veteran used that that experience and was able to take advantage of a slight bobble in Turns 1 and 2 by the leader to take the lead on Lap 16.
“The car was really good, pretty much all night,” Herr said. “You kind of have to watch yourself moving up through the pack. A couple of guys have an issue keeping it straight, and they were getting out there in the slop and pushing across.
“Dave was going really well. He runs Belmit Motors, and he had one in there. He was setting a good pace and made a mistake down there in one and two. I hated that for him, but I’m glad we could get by him.”
Unfortunately for Hollar, he spun on Lap 17. One lap later, Scott Dellinger stopped to bring out the final caution and put Edkin, who charged from 15th to second, outside of Herr on the double-file restart.
But this was Herr’s night. Edkin couldn’t pull out any late magic this week, and Herr went on to score his 20th career win at BAPS Motor Speedway and an extra $750 posted by CH Recovery and Dirty Deeds Fabrication.
“My race team, they are the best,” said Herr, who banked $2,000 for the win. “They work their butts off every night of the week.
“We knew we needed to get quicker. Kenny has been awesome this year, and I’m glad we were able to get him off his throne.”
Edkin settled for second, with Russ Mitten advancing from 12th to third in the final rundown. Mike Enders and John Edkin completed the top five. Hollar, Enders, and Chase Gutshall were heat winners in the 22-car field.
Patrick McClane took the lead on the eighth circuit and sped away to victory in the 20-lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock main event.
Michael Goodwin started on the outside pole and drove into the lead. On Lap 8, his race came to an end when he stopped on the speedway.
McClane, who started fourth, took over the lead and went on to score the victory. Tim Berkheimer, Scott Arnold, Andrew Hogue, and Donnie Broderick completed the top five. McClane and Bill Powell were heat winners for the 17-car field.
In Limited Stock action, Chris Anderson charged from fifth to the front in the opening lap and paced the field over the entire 20-lap distance.
Matt Worley, A.J. Hoffner, Ricky Weaver Jr., and Robbie Carroll completed the top five. Robbie Carroll, Tim Campbell, and Justin Williamson were heat winners for the 22-car field.
