Sandia Speedway Set for POWRi NMMRA Racing Action

Belleville, IL. (08/11/2020) For the first time in POWRi Non-Wing Sprint League history, a visit to Alien Motor Speedway would take place over the weekend with outstanding on-track action and even some post-race dramatics thrown in for flair. Pairing together the POWRi Lucas Oil Border Tour Sprint Series as well as the POWRi New Mexico Motor Racing Association would finally get to hit the track in 2020 to prove their competitor’s driving skills. Entrants from all over would flock to the New Mexico desert battling for supremacy on both Friday, August 7th with Caleb Saiz winning the night and Saturday, August 8th as Rick Ziehl would be declared the victor.

First up on Friday night’s action-packed event, #77 Colt Treharn would appear to be the car to beat by gaining the lead after pole-sitter #20z Rick Ziehl would hit an infield tire on the first lap. A tricky-track and contact with an emerging hole would get the better of the race leader when Treharn would suffer a left rear tire going flat. Benefiting from a fading Treharn, Caleb Saiz #99 would race his way to the lead and on to victory from a seventh starting position. Saiz would not only win the feature event but would also gather the hard charger award for his excellent on-track performance. Close racing would also see Dennis Giles #13 and Spencer Hill #11w battle hard for positions with Giles placing second and Hill rounding out Friday’s podium finishers.

Then, on Saturday, August 8th the traditional POWRi Sprint Leagues would once again hit the speedy racing surface of Alien Motor Speedway to conclude their weekend trip to Roswell, New Mexico. Previous night’s one-time feature leader #77 Colt Treharn would be on a rail once again, leading every circuit around Alien Motor Speedway and on to the feature victory from his pole starting spot. Treharn would make only one costly mistake the entire night though, by going to his pit’s immediately following the feature event and forgoing the required post-race scaling inspection.

Treharn would keep his professionalism and sportsmanship throughout the entire process, apologetic for his driving error, and understanding of the decisions made by POWRi and track officials. After a post-race disqualification of Colt Treharn, Rick Ziehl #20z, who maintained a solid performance throughout the race placing second was declared the eventual feature winner. Night one winner Caleb Saiz #99 would be scored in the runner-up positioning as Spencer Hill #11w continued with consistency by rounding out the podium for the second straight night. Hill would battle through the field from starting tenth to place third, also gaining the hard charger award in the process.

Next on the schedule for the POWRi Lucas Oil New Mexico Motor Racing Association will be a return trip to Sandia Speedway in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday, August 15th. Pit Gates open at 4 PM, with Hot Laps scheduled for 6 PM, and racing action to follow.
