Rosters come together for the 2nd Annual Mayes County Coaches’ Cup

It’s been nearly a year since the inaugural running of the Mayes County Coaches’ Cup when five coaches from the Mayes County schools raced one another in a grudge race. This year a new spin has been put on the event in which the schools were given more of an active role in selecting the coach that would put on a fire suit and helmet to represent their school in the epic car race. However, just one school had enough nominees to truly delve into the new format of electing their driver.

It’s no surprise that Pryor decided to let the defending champ race again this season in hopes of keeping the travelling “Coaches’ Cup” trophy in Pryor. Coach Jeramy Branchcomb will once again be the wheelman for the Tigers. Adair elected to do the same with last year’s runner-up Coach Rob Gilstrap and he will race again on behalf of the Warriors. Salina took a different approach by sidelining last season’s third-place finisher Coach Matt Williams for Coach Sean Smith who will strap in for the Wildcats. Locust Grove had no choice but to bring in new blood for the event after Coach Matt Hennesy left LG for a position in Pawhuska. This year Coach David Gilstrap will race for the Pirates. Chouteau’s nominee is still to be determined as three brave souls put their name in the mix to race for the Wildcats. Ballots will soon be delivered to Chouteau Schools to determine their driver. Last year’s representative Coach Adam Klucevsek is in the running along with Coaches Danny Croft and Teana Tramel.

The 2nd Annual Mayes County Coaches’ Cup will take place on Saturday, September 8th. The prize will be the “Coaches’ Cup” trophy and the winning coach’s respective team will receive a catered meal prior to a game of choice courtesy of Salina Highbanks Speedway. Football teams and cheerleaders in uniform will be admitted free to the event, and all students will enjoy a discounted admission ticket rate of just $5. Racing will begin at 7pm on Saturday, September 8th.
