Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Okla. (Aug. 18, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. registered his second Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour victory of the season on Saturday at Salina Highbanks Speedway.
“We were the fastest car in hot laps and we were the fastest car in the heat races,” he said. “We ran the fastest lap in the feature, too.”
Hafertepe Jr. showcased his speed around the high-banked track throughout the night, which started when he powered from third place to win his heat race. That earned him a spot in the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 6 to line up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“The outside row was the place to be on the start,” he said. “We got to the top right away and jumped to third on the start. I followed (Mike) Goodman and (Jason) Johnson. Me and Johnson traded some sliders for a few laps. After a while I think he got overanxious.”
Johnson and Goodman collided on Lap 6, which gave Hafertepe Jr. the lead.
“We probably checked out at the beginning,” he said. “Toward the end our car started going away in turns three and four. I think we only beat (Johnny Herrera) by three tenths of a second. I used a lapped car to block him coming off turn four to get the win.”
While Hafertepe Jr. inherited the top spot because of a crash, he noted that he had a car capable of winning regardless of any incidents.
“Lap times don’t lie,” he said. “I really thought we had a good enough car to win the race even if they didn’t crash. I think it would have been a really good battle between me and Johnson.”
Hafertepe Jr. will compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour this Thursday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., for the Mid-South Showdown and on Friday at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn.
