Mingus Makes Unexpected Road Trip That Ends With 12th-Place Finish

Inside Line Promotions – CONNEAUT, Ohio (May 23, 2017) – Mother Nature has certainly given race teams major headaches so far in 2017.
For Kevin Mingus, last weekend looked like a total wash out. However, the Huber/Mingus race team hit the road and got to not only race, but more importantly learn while recording a top-15 result.
Mingus had planned to compete last Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, with the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series presented by Engine Pro. However, rain forced the track to cancel early in the afternoon. The team decided to head to Raceway 7 and run their 305ci sprint car against the 360ci sprint cars of the Patriot Sprint Tour.
“It was a last-minute decision,” he said. “The car was already loaded up and Kurt (Huber) decided to give it a try. We got there late and didn’t bring the right gear and in the heat race the car ran out of breath by the end of the straightaways. When the track slicked off we were competitive.”
Mingus, who finished seventh in a heat race, maneuvered from his 17th starting position in the feature to a 12th-place finish during his debut at the track.
“I compare the track to a bigger version of Fremont (Speedway in Fremont, Ohio),” he said. “The turns are tight and challenging and it was the first time I’ve raced on a sandy track. It was a good night and a very big confidence booster for me.”
Mingus plans to compete this Friday at Attica Raceway Park and this Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Should the weather become an issue once again, he said the team has a back-up plan to go to Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pa., on Saturday.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – Mingus’ mom and dad, Ken and Angie
“My parents have been incredible supporters of my race career,” Kevin Mingus said. “I really want to acknowledge my dad. A couple of weeks ago he made the unselfish decision to take a different role on the race team and become more of my cheerleader. He works a lot of hours at his job and the race team was like a second job and it worried me. I wanted him to come to the track and relax and not worry about the car and have a life outside of racing. He has accepted that role and that has helped me relax and not worry about him and focus on what I need to do to get better in the race car.”
Mingus would also like to thank Huber Machine Werx, DB3 Imaging, Mid-America Chemical Corporation, Apple Girl Art, Jamie and Austin Neel, Hillbilly Rod Shop, Midwest Equipment Company Crane Rental, K1 Race Gear, Kear’s Speed Shop and FK Rod Ends for their continued support.
