It was a night that was full of excitement at Willamette Speedway on Saturday August 17th. The 1/3-mile clay oval would play host to the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region for the final time of 2013. Also the Sportsman and Mini Trucks were in competition and provided some splendid action as the support classes. On Sunday the 18th the third and final leg of the Summer Sizzle Tour was held during the afternoon (results below) for the Karts.
Henry Van Dam of Enumclaw, Washington started out the thirty-lap ASCS-Northwest Region feature setting a rapid pace in his Kovash Logging/Johanson Excavating/Les Schwab Tire Center of Enumclaw #33V A.R.T. Van Dam would be the car to beat until he would get caught up in an incident on lap fifteen. Van Dam would violently flip down the front shoot but would manage to walk away from the wreckage under his own power.
The incident would give the lead to the SKS Racing/Al Parker Racing Engines/Champion Racing Oil #11 KPC of Roger Crockett. Crockett would blaze the trail but found himself fending off the likes of youngsters Reece Goetz and Seth Nunes challenging for the top spot. Crockett would keep his mount in front and secured the lead via lapped traffic by making several key passes. The win would mark his first of the season at Willamette but his eighth overall of 2013 with the ASCS-Northwest Region.
Reece Goetz of Snohomish, Washington in the Great Western Transport/Elma Lanes/Speedmart Inc. #9R Eagle was second followed by the Starks Timber Processing/MASCO Petroleum/Blue Dot Fabrication #55 Schnee in third. The balance of the top five would consist of Garen Linder from Central Point, Oregon in his Linder Powdercoating/Rodgers Racing Engines #22L KPC in fourth and the BC Motorsports/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #2 KPC of Cottage Grove, Oregon’s Colin Baker.
Earlier in the evening heat race winners were the Napa Auto Parts/Lucas Oil Products/Rodgers Racing Engines #5N of Seth Nunes from Medford, Oregon and Roger Crockett.
The Sportsman main event would produce some excellent racing. Steve Moore of Scio would lead early in the Flatt Muffler/Ye Olde Pizza Shoppe #88 Rayburn, driving for Brian Winkler, but would be beat to the line while racing to the yellow on lap five. The driver that would beat him was Brian Goetz of Lyons.
Goetz, in his #38 Rayburn, and Moore would put on a great race in and out of traffic. On lap twenty-two as the two leaders would contest for the position on the bottom of the track it would leave the high side wide open. That would give the Hackney Racing/Wirth Wireless #1 Pierce of Albany’s Brian Smith an opportunity to make a move for the win.
Smith would briefly lead but Goetz would be quick to take it back. Goetz would hold on the rest of the way as Smith continued to apply the pressure for his second win of the season.
Brian Smith would end the night in second while Phil Housworth of Lebanon was third in the bullygang.com/Wirth Wireless #33 Jet. Steve Moore would place fourth followed by the #0P of Briley Pompe from Philomath.
The Mini Trucks were equally as good with a wonderful race between Sid Bucholz and the Carson Oil/Guy's Automotive and Lube/Prineville Sign and Banner #24 of Don Croy who both are from Prineville. Bucholz and Croy would exchange the lead back and forth on several occasion but it would Bucholz winning the race in his first time chauffeuring his MR Power #25 entry around the Willamette Speedway this year.
Kenny Keefer of Prineville was second in The Guy's Automotive and Lube/Prineville 76 #SIX entry while behind him in third was defending champion of Mark Vonsild from Scio in the Xtreme Motorsports/Schram Brothers Excavating #21½ machine. The balance of the top five finishers would consist of Jefferson’s Jennifer Robbins in the Progressive Tile and Marble #12 in fourth and Loree McDonald of Prineville in fifth in her #66.
Sunday’s Summer Sizzle Tour for the Karts was a huge success with great racing and great car counts. In addition to the already added bonus money for the race Crockers Cars and Whisler Construction both added more money into the purses for the event. James Gang Pizza will be sponsoring the point fund for the three race series and awards will be given out as soon as possible as the points get tallied.
Willamette Speedway will be back in action on Friday August 23rd for the return of the Karts. On Saturday the 24th it will be the Modified Tribute To Clair. This is the IMCA Modified race dedicated to the late owner and operator of the 1/3-mile clay oval Clair Arnold. Also competing will be the DIRTcar Super Late Models, Super Sports, and Sportsman.
