Wednesdays with Wayne - On the Move!

(Bill W) April 19, 2017 – Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing #2c were on the move last weekend. After competing with the World of Outlaws at Gator Motorplex near Willis, Texas Thursday, they followed the series to Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas Friday before heading all the way up to the Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia to compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series Saturday.

Things seemed promising in Willis Thursday. “We were fourth quick hot-lapping,” says Wayne. “We were in the first set, and no one was passing us as the track came in, so we didn’t change a whole lot on the car. We went out to qualify and we picked up a second. Apparently, we didn’t pick up enough, because we were 22nd quick!”

Behind the 8-ball, Wayne did what he could to make the show. “We didn’t get out of the heat race,” he says. “We barely made the A through the B, and then I just pulled in after taking a lap. It looked like a bunch of stuff was going to get torn up, and sure enough it did.”

Wayne timed in seventh quick at his familiar Devil’s Bowl Friday, but the track uncharacteristically threw the veteran for a loop in the feature. “We were able run third in the heat, and that started us seventh in the feature,” he says. “We just had it a little tight. We ended up 13th. We tightened it up, because we figured the track would go away like it usually does, but it didn’t.”

After the long tow to Missouri, he drew a starting spot in the back of his heat race. “We were able to get up to fifth there,” says Wayne. “That put us one spot out of the redraw, so we ended up starting ninth in the feature.”

It was a rough beginning for Wayne. “On the start, I got into the back of (Justin) Henderson, and that got me all messed up,” he says. “I lost a spot or two there. Everyone was running around on the curb following each other. I thought I’d make something happen on the bottom of three and four.”

For a while, it seemed to be the place to be, but he would have to get back in line. “I thought I was making some ground, but a couple guys ripped me on the top,” says Wayne. “I had to get back up there in line, and follow in tenth. It was just follow the leader.”

The team has some options this weekend, pending Mother Nature. “We’re talking about going to either Wichita, or Memphis and Pevely with the Outlaws,” says Wayne. “It all depends on the weather on where we’re headed.”
