Stewart Opens Canadian Nationals with Fan Appreciation Night Victory

T.J. Buffenbarger, OHSWEKEN, Ont. (September 15, 2011) – Shane Stewart started his mission of winning a third consecutive Canadian Sprint Car Nationals on Thursday by winning the fan appreciation night feature at Ohsweken Speedway. The current Lucas Oil ASCS National points leader started on the pole and led all 20 laps driving the J.G. Motorsports Gaerte powered JG 3.0 chassis.

“I have to thank Joe and Tim for giving me a great car to drive again,” said Stewart in victory lane. “This is a great start to the weekend, and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Stewart and Jamie Collard started on the front row for the 20-lap feature event with Stewart taking the initial lead while Collard and Turner raced for second. Going into turn three several cars got stacked up with Tim Kelly ending up backwards, airborne, and took a hard end over end tumble in turn three to bring out the red flag. Kelly exited the car under his own power, but was transported to a local hospital for observation.

Stewart led after the complete restart while Collard, Jamie Turner, and Jim Huppunen raced three wide for second. Turned took the spot while Collard and Huppunen continued to battle for third.

The caution flag appeared on lap five when former Canadian Sprint Car Nationals winner Wayne Johnson rolled to a stop off of turns three and four. Johnson went to the work area before returning to the tail of the field for the restart.

While Stewart pulled way while Collard raced around the top side of Huppunen and Turner to more from fourth to second in one swoop. While Turner began to drop through the field Kyle Sauder, taking his first ride in Glenn Styres #14 car, moved up from eighth starting spot to take over fourth position by lap 8.

Stewart was just about to catch slower traffic again on lap 12 when Bryan Howland rolled to a stop in turn three. Howland went to the work area and returned to the back of the field for the restart.

Stewart opened up a three car advantage over Collard during the restart. Behind them Sauder overtook Huppunen for third on lap 15 and one lap later picked off Collard for the second spot. Stewart began to pick up lapped traffic coming down for the white flag, but did not hold up Stewart enough for Sauder to mount a challenge. Sauder finished second in his first visit to Ohsweken Speedway visit. Collard, Huppunen, and Randy Hannagan rounded out the top five.

Scott Kreutter, Justin Barger, Jessica Zemken, Keith Dempster, and Stewart won heat race events. Kyle Patrick and Gregg Dalman won the B-Main events.
