Inside Line Promotions – ORRVILLE, Ohio (April 25, 2017) – Caleb Helms was wicked fast last weekend as he recorded a runner-up result at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., on Friday before capturing a top-10 finish at Wayne County Speedway with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on Saturday.
Helms kicked off the weekend on Friday in Western Pennsylvania, where he gained two positions to finish second in a heat race at Lernerville Speedway.
“We ended up having the fastest lap out of the heat race and the track was getting faster as the rest of the night went on,” he said. “(Logan) Wagner started on the high side, which is the preferred groove, and we just couldn’t get around him in the heat.”
The feature inversion started Helms on the pole for the main event.
“(Logan) Wagner got a pretty good start and got out ahead of us,” he said. “We chased him around for the rest of the race. We’d catch him in lapped traffic and be right on his bumper to try and make a pass, but just couldn’t get around him. Our last chance to get around him was a restart with four laps to go, but I didn’t get a good enough run off of turn two.
“It’s disappointing to start on the front row and not be able to bring home a win, but we know what we have to do different and what I need to do different as a driver moving forward.”
Helms took the momentum of a podium finish into his home state of Ohio for the Arctic Cat Circuit of Champions series event at Wayne County Speedway on Saturday.
Helms was quickest in his qualifying group and picked up the overall quick time award.
“We were about five tenths of a second off from the track record at Wayne County,” he said. “It would have been cool to set a new record, but it was still awesome to have that much speed around that place.”
He finished fifth in a heat race to advance into a dash, in which he won to start on the outside of Jac Haudenschild in the main event.
“We started out strong and were able to carry that through the majority of the night,” Helms said. “We changed a little too much for the feature and fell back several positions, but we started running better laps and were battling for fifth before bumping wheels with (Travis) Philo and settling for seventh. It’s disappointing, but we know we’re knocking on the door for an All Star win soon.”
Helms, who ranks third in the series championship standings, will rejoin the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions series for a tripleheader this Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa.; and Sunday at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa.
“I love the Ohio and Pennsylvania rivalry because it really puts everyone’s driving ability to the test,” he said. “I know all of us Ohio guys, especially myself, want to beat those Posse guys so they better be ready.”
