Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2020) – Trey Starks posted a pair of top-10 finishes in Iowa last weekend.
The Gobrecht Motorsports competitor placed 10th on Friday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville before hustling to sixth on Sunday at Southern Iowa Speedway.
Starks kicked off the 30th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank by qualifying 28th quickest during his preliminary night on Friday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville.
“We really put ourselves behind for the weekend with our qualifying lap on our prelim night,” he said. “We went out a little bit late, which didn’t help, but that certainly wasn’t the only reason. You know it going in that if you don’t put down a good qualifying lap it pretty much ruins your whole weekend. You have to play catch up the whole time.
“We won our heat race to get as many points as we could. We had a really good car and drove it from 18th to 10th in the feature. We actually had a restart and were running eighth. We gambled trying to get another spot and lost two, but we were really happy with the car.”
Starks’ rally for a top 10 put him ninth on the starting grid for the B Main on Saturday.
“We picked up a handful of spots, but we needed a couple more,” he said. “We just couldn’t quite get there to get a transfer. The 360 cars are really equal and racing near the front of the B Main, those drivers are really good.”
Starks finished sixth, missing a spot into the main event by only two positions.
The team headed to Southern Iowa Speedway on Sunday for the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge presented by Searsboro Telephone Co. with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. Starks placed third in a heat race and second in a qualifier to lock himself into the 12th starting spot for the main event.
“We had a great night in Oskaloosa,” he said. “That was probably the hardest I’ve worked in the car in a long tie. About Lap 5 while racing with Sam Hafertepe Jr. we knocked the nose wing down. The track was fast and hooked up. It was a handful, but the car was fast. That was the first time I’ve gained positions with the nose wing down. If we hadn’t knocked the nose wing down and had a caution or two I think we could have had a car capable of winning.”
Starks overcame the early problem as he maneuvered to a sixth-place showing, which was his 12th top 10 of the season.
The team returns to Knoxville Raceway this Thursday through Saturday for The One and Only and the 9th annual Brownells Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
