Hill Enjoys Her Career-Best 360 Knoxville Nationals Outing

Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 11, 2020) – Alex Hill produced a career-best result at the 30th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank, which was also highlighted by a top-five qualifying time and an exciting B Main victory on her preliminary night.
“I was really, really happy with the way things went at 360 Nationals,” she said. “My crew gave me a fast car every time I was on the track. I think racing at Knoxville for three weeks before the Nationals really helped, too.”
Her first night of competition got off to a solid start when she posted the fourth-quickest time out of 48 cars in the all-important time trials at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.
“I messed up on the exit of turn four on my first lap, but I was able to keep the car from washing up the track there on my second lap and that was the faster one,” she said.
The six-car inversion placed her in the sixth starting position of her heat race with the top four finishers advancing to the A Main.
“I had a decent start, but a guy came up in front of me and I had to get on the brakes, which made me lose a lot of ground,” she said. “We were fast and gaining on cars at the end, but we had just gotten too strung out before then for us to have enough time to challenge them. We finished sixth.”
Having the quickest qualifying time of the cars not transferring to the A Main placed Hill on the pole position for the B Main.
“We had four starts before we could get a lap completed and we thought the top would be the place to run,” she said. “On the final restart, the guy beside me got the jump. But that actually turned out better for me. I went to the bottom and found out it was pretty good. I got the lead and decided to stay there. I had (five-time 360 Knoxville Nationals champion) Terry McCarl pull alongside me at the end, but I was able to hold him off for the win. That was one of my biggest wins in a sprint car.”
Hill’s victory slotted her in the 21st starting position in the night’s main event. She gained a spot to finish 20th.
“My car was better on the bottom, but that was where most of the other cars I was racing with were running,” she said. “That made it tough to move forward and I just kind of held my position.”
Her preliminary performance placed Hill in the B Main on Saturday. She ended up crossing the finish line 13th, which was the best run during her career at the famed event. Hill then closed out her weekend of racing in Iowa on Sunday at the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge presented by Searsboro Telephone Co. The Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event was held at Southern Iowa Speedway.
“The track at Oskaloosa was pretty tough to pass on,” she said. “It was pretty much one lane most of the night. I was able to move up a spot in my heat race, but the guys up front in my qualifier played games and that cost me positions on the start that I wasn’t able to get back. We passed some cars in the B Main, but missed making the transfer by a couple of spots.
“We had a fast car all night, but the track was really tough to pass on and the breaks didn’t go our way.”
