Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2014) – Following a month of racing in the Midwest, Chase Johnson made his return home last weekend by scoring a top 10 at Petaluma Speedway.

Johnson kicked off the competition on Saturday by qualifying ninth quickest in his family sprint car.

“The driver got off to a slow start,” he said. “I saw a lot of Midwest driving style in hot laps and qualifying. I was driving the car straight so I had to adjust my driving style quite a bit because I’ve been on half miles the past month. We adjusted and the car was great all night.”

Unfortunately, a fuel pump issue plagued him during his heat race, which he was unable to finish. The team made a change to fix the problem prior to Johnson starting ninth in the main event.

“The track slowed down quite a bit,” he said. “It became a really racy track so that was really good. It allowed me to get some passing starting in ninth. Before we knew it were sitting in fifth place. With three laps to go everything started getting hectic.”

As a couple of drivers battled for position in front of Johnson, he eyed an opportunity to edge closer to a podium result.

“I saw a spot where I could go so I tried to make it happen, but we got into the left rear tire of another guy,” he said. “We didn’t spin out, but we were out of shape in the infield.”

The caution came out and after restarting at the back of the field, Johnson rebounded to post an eighth-place finish.

“I think we had one of the fastest cars out of there,” he said. “It was a bummer we were in that incident. It was hard racing, just two guys going for the same spot.”

Johnson will make his 410ci debut at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., this Friday for the Tyler Wolf Memorial as he pilots a car owned by Shawn and Cindy Thomas.

“It’ll be good for me,” he said. “I don’t really have too many expectations. We’re just looking forward to putting good laps together.”

Johnson will wrap up the weekend on Saturday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., for the 54th annual Johnny Key Classic.
