Ensign Dominates Round 2 at Petaluma

SACRAMENTO, CA- (6-9-12) – It was a monstrous match up between the cars and stars of the Joe Hunt Magneto’s Wingless Sprint Shootout Series versus the Pit Stop USA wingless sprint cars of Petaluma Speedway Saturday night June 9th. A total of 21 wingless sprint cars entered round number two for the Joe Hunt Wingless Series but in the end it was a Petaluma regular who dominated the night. Sebastopol driver Geoff Ensign, known as “The Human Highlight Reel”, led all 25 main event laps to win the star studded event. The 22-year-old masher drove a flawless race for Jim and Annette Van Lare. It was his first win of the year during the Joe Hunt Series but his third in a row at Petaluma. The previous two wins coming aboard a 360 winged sprint car.
Ensign started on the front row of the 25-lap main event. He grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back. Caution happened early in the event when current point leader Terry Schank Jr. and Joe Stornetta made contact entering turn three. Because of the slick, smooth racing surface, the bottom was the place to be. Unfortunately for Stornetta, he drifted wide coming out of turn two and it allowed Schank to make a run on his inside. As the two raced side-by-side, each tried to get to the bottom in turn three and that’s when the contact occurred. Stornetta spun around and the yellow was needed.
The race resumed with Ensign leading followed by Scott Hall and Schank in third. The race flowed seamlessly for quite a while as the drives did a great job checking the race going caution free. On lap 17, Schank was able to pass Scott Hall for the second spot. Schank then set his sites on Ensign. Yet, Ensign had a sizable lead and it didn’t look like Schank had a shot. With three to go a yellow was needed and this changed everything. Now Schank had the chance to restart right behind Ensign. Give Ensign all the credit, he never faulted and led the final three laps with ease. Ensign crossed the line about a half second ahead of Schank. Hall finished third ahead of fourth place Cody Smith. The Biggs driver, Smith, did a good job after starting in the eighth position. Devon Ostheimer started ninth and finished in the fifth position.
Heat race winners included Sparky Howard, Stornetta and Ensign. Trevor Schmid started the night off by turning the quickest lap in qualifying. The lap registered at a 15.571.
The Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Shootout Series will return to Petaluma Speedway on September 8th. The next Joe Hunt race is scheduled to take place at Placerville Speedway on June 23rd.
