[b PENNGROVE, CA (6-14-10]) – After a long road trip to the Pacific Northwest to compete in Western Speedweek, Penngrove's Alissa Geving has a break during her demanding schedule with the traveling Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series this weekend. The week off will permit the 18-year-old two time winged sprint car champion to return to her home track of Petaluma Speedway for a high profile wingless race on the track where she made history the past two years.
"I'm looking forward to coming back home to Petaluma for a week," said Geving. "I love the traveling series but I do miss the local fans and the short trip home from the track. We did really well at this event last year and I'm looking to improve on that Saturday."
Geving has logged an entry in Saturday's United States Auto Club – CRA Wingless race at Petaluma Speedway. The event is one of 12 different races at 10 different tracks for the USAC campaign. Last year, the local female racer drove to a history making USAC heat race win on the 3/8 mile dirt track and drove her way to a fourth place finish in the A-feature.
"The winged sprint cars have always been my main focus but I love the opportunity to race wingless, whether it's a sprint car or a midget," added Geving. "I'm always looking for an opportunity to race in these events as time allows. After being on the road so long I think this whole team could use a good night at home."
Geving returned on Thursday from the Pacific Northwest after competing in the Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series' Western Speedweek. The event began in Chico on Friday night and then traveled north to three additional tracks in the Pacific Northwest. The final race at Lebanon Speedway fell victim to weather. While many teams traveled on to the non-GSC Dirt Cup in Washington, Geving made a prior commitment to appear in the USAC event at Petaluma Speedway.
"We hung in there on speedweek but it was a tough trip," said Geving, who suffered a damaging accident on Friday night that kept the team hard at work on the road to prepare and recover for the next race. "It was really great to race a number of races in that short of time and race on some track I have never competed on."
At Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night, Geving qualified 21st in the field and secured a starting spot in the A-feature with a 3rd place in her preliminary heat race. In the 30-lap feature event she fell victim to contact in traffic on the front stretch that sent her #3x Tillett Tool, Pit Stop USA, Auto Repairs Unlimited sprint car into a damaging end-over-end rollover. She ended her night uninjured in the 22nd position.
After making repairs late into the night and early morning, the team hit the road to Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday night. In this event, Geving was 13th quick with an 11:833 second lap. She finished 5th in her heat race and concluded the night with a 13th place finish in the B main event, fighting brake complications throughout the event.
On Monday night the team made their first ever start in Cottage Grove, Oregon. In this event Geving was 7th quick with a 10:637 second lap. She finished 5th in her heat race. After earning the fourth place position in the B feature secured a spot in the 30-lap A-feature where she finished 13th at the checkered flag.
On Tuesday night the final round of the series was cancelled at Lebanon due to rain. The team returned home late Wednesday and began to prepare for the upcoming wingless event at Petaluma Speedway where many of Geving's local fans will be eager for her return.
"I get a lot of support from my fans about my decision to travel this year, most of them understand it's an advancement step in my racing career. It's been a hard transition because we went from running up front regularly to working our way up the ranks again," said Geving. "This Saturday is an opportunity to go out and race without the stress the of points and see those local fans that can't travel. I appreciate them and all of their positive support."
