Crawley, Clouser earn feature wins as 12th annual Hockett-McMillin Memorial opens at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 15, 2022) - Veteran Tim Crawley led all the way to pick up the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series feature win on opening night of the 12th annual Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Meanwhile, Illinois' Mario Clouser was first to the checkers on the non-wing side of things as he earned the POWRi WAR Sprint main event Thursday night.

A total of 107 cars, including 78 ASCS Sprints, were in action on Thursday with the other half of the WAR Sprints scheduled to compete on Friday night for their preliminary program. Drivers in both divisions are compiling points toward the starting field on Saturday night.

The event recognizes the legacy of Jesse Hockett, from Warsaw, Missouri, who was a star in both the winged and non-wing sprint divisions when he lost his life in a shop accident in 2010. His cousin and crew chief, Daniel McMillin, was killed in an automobile accident in 2006.

Crawley, of Benton, Arkansas, started up front and led all 25 laps en route to the $3,000 Lucas Oil ASCS feature victory. He held off Derek Hagar in a race that ran caution-free and took only 7 minutes, 4 seconds.

"We work out butts off and this is what makes it all worthwhile," Crawley said. "We lost a good friend at home this week to cancer and then here's the Jesse and McMillin deal here. This all means a lot to me, it really does."

Crawley points to his trophy and noted that he already has one Hockett-McMillin prelim trophy on his wall at home.

"Here's another and we've got two more nights. I've got room for two more," Crawley said in victory lane. Saturday night's finale pays $10,000 to the ASCS feature winner.

Crawley, starting outside of row one, grabbed the lead at the start but Hagar and Joe B. Miller were close behind through the first five laps.

By lap 10, Crawley had gradually built a 1.5-second lead over Hagar in the extended green-flag run. He was able to navigate lapped traffic to maintain the margin as the laps quickly clicked away and opened a 2.2-second command with five remaining.

Crawley held on from there to beat fellow Arkansas driver Hagar by 1.2 seconds. Mark Smith finished third with Miller fourth and Wayne Johnson in fifth.

"We got to the lead and I started creeping down and once I got into the rubber, I didn't push it too hard," Crawley said. "I knew it was going to be hard to pass and I wasn't going to get out of line. I actually let the lapped cars go. I started pedaling and hitting my marks.

"Sometimes you don't have to lap a whole bunch of cars to win, you just have to stay in position and that's what I was trying to do."

Clouser earns POWRi WAR win: Mario Clouser of Chatham, Illinois, took control after an early back-and-forth battle and led the final 20 laps to earn his 13th career POWRi WAR Sprint feature victory.

Clouser beat Wyatt Burks by just over a second to locked himself into Saturday night's $4,077-to-win main event.

"I was a little nervous there. Wyatt got by us a couple of times early and I had to kind of hustle to get him back," Clouser said after his $2,000 triumph.

Clouser said Burks showed him a line early in the race of using the high groove in turns one and two and the low line in three and four.

"I was afraid that might be the scenario. It's up over the edge there off four," Clouser said. "You just can't carry enough momentum there to make it work. I won one here a couple of years ago where you had to run high down there and low down here."

Clouser, who set fast qualifying time earlier in the evening before winning his heat race, started on the pole and led the opening lap. But Isaac Chapple used a pass out of turn four to lead lap two before the two swapped places again on lap five.

A close battle between the leaders began to see separation by lap 12 as Clouser opened a two-second lead over Chapple. Wyatt Burks moved into second a lap later with seventh-starting Schudy advancing to fourth.

Clouser’s lead hit 2.5 seconds by lap 17 as he weaved his way through lapped traffic. That comfortable margin was wiped away, however, when a caution flag flew with eight laps to go.

Clouser was able to hang onto the lead after the restart, holding off Burks by 1.08 seconds with Joe B. Miller rallying from 13th to third. Xavier Domey finished fourth with Casey Shuman fifth.

"It's good to get a prelim-night win," Clouser said. "We just need to finish it on Saturday. We've been close a couple of times. It would be nice to seal the deal and get one. I really want to win this race, probably worse than any race in the country right now."
