Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Domer relishes latest USRA Modified win as family affair
WHEATLAND, MO. (June 17, 2021) - You don’t see many dirt-track racers celebrate victories with burnouts and smoky doughnuts. Count Chase Domer among those who does, especially on his way to victory lane at Lucas Oil Speedway.
“I don’t know, it just means a lot to me and I like putting on a little bit of a show for the fans,” Domer said, reflecting upon his burnout on the backstretch last Saturday - as the fans cheered - following his Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modified feature victory.
Domer said it was part his own excitement and part fan reaction he received - even weeks after his first Lucas Oil Speedway feature win and subsequent burnout last summer.
“I did it the first time and had some people I didn’t even know come up to me and tell me it was pretty cool,” Domer said. “So I just tried to put on something fun on for the fans. Plus, it’s a big deal to win at Wheatland. They don’t come around very often. It makes it, when it does happen, a lot better.
“I haven’t quite mastered it yet,” Domer added, with a laugh, on what makes a great burnout on dirt. “I killed (the motor) this time. But I have some ideas if I get another one that I might try.”
Domer’s next opportunity arrives this Saturday night when the Cedar Creek Beef Jerky USRA Modifieds headline the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series program Presented by iHeartMedia with a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win main event.
The Missouri Metal Buildings ULMA Late Models, Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and O’Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars also will resume points chases as the second half of the season begins. In addition, Pure Stocks will be a special guest class for the second and final time in 2021.
Domer, a 31-year-old from Nevada, led the final 19 of 20 laps to capture last Saturday’s feature win. It was his fourth win overall in 2021, to go with three feature victories at Old 71 Speedway in Butler. In Lucas Oil Speedway points, he is 49 points behind midseason champ Dillon McCowan and in USRA Modified national points he was fifth in the most-recent standings.
“The season’s been going pretty good,” Domer said. “We’re having fun at Butler on Fridays, though they’re struggling to get cars up there. At Wheatland, we’ve had some trouble qualifying, but I think we’re getting closer with our qualifying efforts. It’s so big over there. You need to start close to the front.”
Domer said his MB Customs chassis is getting dialed in better and better all the time, especially with the dryer, slicker track conditions that normally prevail during the summer months.
While last year’s win at Lucas Oil Speedway always will be special, because it was his first there, he said the latest might be even better for multiple reasons.
“With the time span between the two, this one was almost better,” Domer said. “When we won the last time, we were the last class to race and by the time we got through tech, there weren’t many people left. This time, we were the first feature of the night.
“This also was the first time I’ve ever won when my wife (Carly) and daughters (Aubree and Reese) were there. This one was important. The girls have always wanted to get up there and get their picture taken, so I finally got that done for them.”
Racing is all about family for Domer as his dad, Berry Domer, is a former dirt-track competitor and his grandpa, Kenny Rains, embraces the time-consuming chore of grooving tires. Father-in-law Kerry Schulze built and maintains the engine while also providing other mechanical assistance.
“I’m pretty lucky,” Domer said of the help he receives, noting that Berry Domer is key in providing insight from a driver’s perspective even though he hasn’t raced in two decades.
“My dad, we go off just as much of what he sees the car doing as much as what I feel,” Chase Domer said. “I’m pretty lucky to have a good coach, if you want to call him that. We work together a lot. He’s just as responsible for the wins as anything I do. It’s a team effort.
“There’s some driver techniques he’s been on to me about. I’ve been playing with some of that stuff, too. It’s paying off. Surprisingly, everyone says (racing) has come a long way, but we go back to his old-school stuff a lot of times and it seems to work.”
Domer said his goals for the remainder of the season are pretty simple.
“I want to keep winning,” he said. “The points are cool, but it’s not what we shoot for. We’re there to win and that’s our main goal. We’re kind of hoping, if we can keep running, it’s fun to watch the USRA national points to see where you go, especially with the USRA Nationals being at Wheatland (Oct. 7-9).
“This will be our first Nationals. We like to camp and hang out and the family likes to go. We’re all looking forward to it. They come from all over for the Nationals. It ought to be some good racing.”

Dad can win a recliner: To commemorate Father's Day weekend, all dads in attendance on Saturday can sign up for a chance to win a reclining chair from Scott's Furniture in Osceola. Sign-up will take place at the Protect the Harvest table on the midway and a drawing to determine the winner will be held during intermission.
Frogs Jr Fan Club Pit Tour: As is a weekly tradition at Lucas Oil Speedway, young fans arriving early are invited to sign up for the Frogs Jr Fan Club Pit Tour. Kids ages 5-12 can sign up on the midway, behind the main grandstands, before 5 p.m. with eight names drawn for a special pit-area tour at 5:15 with flagman Mike Striegel.
They will get to meet some of the drivers, see the cars up close and attend the drivers' meeting prior to return to the midway. Each of the eight will receive a Frogs Jr Fan Club T-Shirt, checkered flag and a gift bag sponsored by RaceGear Unlimited to put items in they receive from the drivers.
Kids' bicycles sought: Lucas Oil Speedway continues to seek bicycle donations for the annual Frog’s Signs Junior Fan Club “Kids’ Night Bicycle Giveaway” during Casey’s General Stores Thursday Night Thunder, on July 1. Drivers, sponsors and fans are being asked to donate boys' and girls' bicycles for youngsters, ages 5-12.
Bikes are accepted at the speedway office during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, and on race nights. New bicycles will be accepted, or monetary donations can be dropped off or mailed to the speedway.

Beat-the-heat suite deal returns: Fans can take in Saturday night's dirt-track action from a VIP Suite on the third level overlooking the front straightaway, as a limited number of individual tickets are available priced at $24 apiece. All VIP Suite seats must be pre-paid and can be reserved by calling Admissions Director Nichole McMillan at (417) 282-5984.
The suite offers prime viewing from inside, where the temperature is climate-controlled, or an outside seating area. Food and drinks are not included in the ticket price, though a host/hostess will be available to take food and drink orders throughout the evening.
Gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday with hot laps at 6:30 and opening ceremonies at 7:05.
