Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 24, 2020) – Robbie Price fought bad luck and high car counts throughout the 10th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial last weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway.
“We were pretty bad the week prior at I-80 and then we turned it around with a third at Randolph County Raceway so I had a little confidence heading into a big weekend,” he said. “But we just didn’t bring our best effort to the table and I can say pretty positively that it was a giant let down.”
With a stout field of 77 drivers in attendance for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at the ‘Diamond of Dirt Tracks,’ Price kicked off Thursday night’s opener by finishing second in a heat race and fourth in a qualifier.
He had to run a B Main and quickly advanced forward from fourth into the lead. However, contact with a competitor following a slide job attempt sent him upside down and ended his night early.
“We had a good pill draw, but as a driver I made poor decisions on the track early in the night,” he said. “I felt like we were going to get into the show, but ultimately we ended upside down and out of contention. It’s easy to place blame on the wreck, but ultimately if I do a better job early in the night we’re not in that position to begin with.”
Price came back Friday night determined to change his luck and he started off by finishing fifth in a heat race. He followed that up by winning a qualifier from the pole position. A runner-up result in a B Main and a fifth-place showing in the Last Chance Qualifier locked Price into the back of the A Main.
“We fixed up all the damage from Thursday and we got ourselves into the show, which is all you can ask for I guess,” he said after finishing 21st. “We went a lap down early and after that there isn’t much you can do in terms of passing, so we just maintained and turned our focus toward Saturday.”
Price picked up two positions to finish fourth in a qualifier on Saturday to earn the outside front row starting spot in a B Main. He was running comfortably in a transfer position when he got upside for the second night of the weekend, ending his chances at contending for the $10,000 top prize.
“I was actually in a transfer spot and I thought we were one out and I was running a little harder than I should have probably,” he said. “It was just an instance where we put ourselves in a bad position early in the week and I was being extra aggressive trying to get it in the show when I maybe didn’t need to be.”
