Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 25, 2018) – Mason Daniel made his debut at the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial last weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway, where he came within one position of earning a spot into the main event with a stout field of 50-plus drivers in attendance.

Daniel opened the final night of the three-night Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com event with a seventh-place showing in the first of four Last Chance Qualifier races, which were lined up by event points earned throughout the first two nights. That put him in a B Main.

“We were running fourth or fifth in the Last Chance Qualifier and the guy behind us had contact with us, which spun us around,” he said. “That broke a Jacob’s Ladder and set us behind. We started further back in the B Main than we probably should have.”

The Californian finished third in the second of three B Mains with just the top-two finishers in each of those 12-lappers transferring to the main event.

“We came up just one spot short, which was a tough way to end the weekend,” he shared. “The guys worked hard all week. I just didn’t get my job done as a driver to get us in the main event. We’ll chalk it up, learn from it and move on to the next one.”

On the opening night of the Hockett/McMillin Memorial, Daniel lined up eighth in a stacked heat race. He was able to gain one spot in that eight-lap race to finish seventh. Daniel just missed earning enough points to be in one of the qualifiers. He capped the night by advancing from ninth to sixth place in a B Main.

“We drew an early heat both nights, which is very challenging,” he said. “We were in the first hot lap session and the track was still greasy so we couldn’t really tell anything about the car. In cases like that, you kind of go into the first heat blind and hope for the best. Starting back in the B Main is tough and we just didn’t get it done.”

Daniel found himself in another very strong heat race on the second night, falling from third to seventh in that eight-lapper. In the first B Main, the 18-year-old charged from the 11th starting spot to cross the line sixth.

“The second night was just about the same story,” he said. “I made a mistake in the heat race, which set us back. We were able to move forward again in the B Main, but it’s tough with the cars that were in the qualifiers starting ahead of you. We came up just a few spots short.”

Daniel ended up moving forward in all but one race throughout the busy weekend.

The team will be off this weekend and Daniel said his next race is to be determined.
