McCreadie's Friday win secures Show-Me 100 pole

By Lyndal Scranton (Wheatland, MO) -- Tim McCreadie made his first-ever victory at Lucas Oil Speedway a timely one Friday night. He hopes it sets the stage for something much bigger on Saturday.

McCreadie, the veteran Dirt Late Model driver from Watertown, N.Y., beat four-time Show-Me 100 champion Jimmy Owens to capture the "Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson" to pick up $6,000.

The stakes will be $30,000-to-win Saturday's 100-lap, 25th annual Show-Me 100 Presented by ProtecttheHarvest.com.

"It's a lot of fun when you hit it right," said McCreadie, who drives a Longhorn chassis. "Any time you can beat him and Don (O'Neal) and the guys that are on this tour, you cherish it, man. This tour is damn hard."

McCreadie and Owens, through points earned through the first two nights of preliminary action, will start on the front row of Saturday night's feature. McCreadie earned the most points and will start from the pole.

The weekend, which began with a win by Earl Pearson Jr. in Thursday night's "Cowboy Classic Presented by Hot Rod Processing," is co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the Lucas Oil MLRA.

Friday's feature was named in honor of Don and Billie Gibson, former owners of West Plains Motor Speedway and founders of the Show-Me 100 in 1993. It saw McCreadie drive from a 10th starting position to the victory, moving into second place by lap 17.

Darrell Lanigan got the jump on pole-sitter Payton Looney and zoomed to the lead at the drop of the green. He set the pace until Owens got past him on lap 14 and quickly opened up a half-straightaway's advantage.

McCreadie, using lapped traffic to his advantage, quickly closed in. He caught and passed Owens going down the backstretch on lap 30 and started to pull away when the race's first caution flew on lap 32 for Mason Zeigler's spin in turn four.

Lanigan spun a lap after the restart for the second caution, leaving McCreadie, Owens, O'Neal, Looney and Scott Bloomquist as the top five with seven laps remaining.

McCreadie put it away down the stretch to win by about 10 car lengths over Owens. O'Neal finished third followed by Bloomquist, Josh Richards and Looney, a local fan favorite from Republic, Mo.

Looney accumulated enough points to earn an outside, third-row starting position for Saturday's feature. He will be right in the middle of a bunch of the sport's heavyweights - with McCreadie leading the charge at the start.

"We're just thankful that the crowd came out. This is the mecca of racing right here," McCreadie said.

"I want to thank the Labonte family for putting faith in me to drive their cars. A Longhorn Chassis won here last night with Earl [Pearson] and we brought home the win tonight," McCreadie added.

McCreadie said he was a bit concerned with Owens behind him after the final caution.

"Jimmy Owens is a professional and he wins here more than we probably ever will," McCreadie said. "You're always worried. I just figured I'd stick to where I was at and, if he beat me, I'd shake his hand and tell him he did a great job."

Owens, third in Thursday's feature, not only is defending Show-Me 100 champ but has won the race four times in the six years it's been held at Lucas Oil Speedway. The Newport, Tenn., veteran feels good about his chances on Saturday.

"We've got a good hot rod," Owens said. "We have a good feel for this place and the car is working good. We can work up high or down low.

"We're going to be sitting pretty good in the points tomorrow night. You're a sitting duck when you're out here leading because this track is so racy. You don't know if you need to be up high or down low. You need to be about fifth or sixth tomorrow, starting."

Looney was Miller Welders Fast Qualifier with a lap of 15.558 seconds. Looney then went on to earn the pole in the feature by holding off Pearson, Thursday's "Cowboy Classic Presented by Hot Rod Processing" winner, in the first heat race.

"One of the biggest things here is timing in. I'm just glad we were able to do that," Looney said.

Other heat-race winners were Dennis Erb, O'Neal, Lanigan, Owens and Mike Marlar.

Dotson earns USRA Modified feature win: Matt Dotson, after finishing second a night earlier, found his way into Pitts Homes USRA Modified victory lane.

Dotson, of Sturgeon, Mo., passed Timmy Culp on lap eight of the 20-lap feature and didn't look back. The two started on the front row.

Jason Pursley of Hermitage finished third with Scott Drake in fourth and Eric Turner fifth.

Through points accumulated the first two nights, Dotson and Turner will start on the front row of Saturday's USRA Modified feature. Jeff Cutshaw and Purlsey will start on row two.
