Sprint Car Format Released For Memorial Day Sprint Car & Midget Nationals

The Driver’s Project (TDP) and Lake Ozark Speedway will be introducing a group time trial format for the $10,000 to win Sprint Car & Midget Nationals on May 29 & 30. This format change has been approved by The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) who will be sanctioning the event. The system addresses three potential concerns for both fans and competitors.

Those concerns being, the possibility of a lengthy show; the amount of track prep required during the course of the event and finally to assure the fans and teams of a fair format allowing the fastest cars to make the show.

The Driver’s Project with the approval of Lake Ozark management and The ASCS have come up with an exciting, fair, group time trial format similar to the current All Star Circuit of Champions system with some minor revisions.

A combination of the ASCS trying out this format during last year's ASCS Speedweek along with the positive reception for The All Star's format drove the thinking behind the changes. The minor revision to The All Star's current time trial was to make qualifying 3rd fastest in your group more beneficial than being 4th fastest.

The race will utilize a group/heat time trial format that will invert the fastest 4 qualifiers in each group - using timed warm-ups. The 3rd fastest qualifier in each group will be given lane choice for the heat. The heat race winner as well as the next fastest time trialer will go to the first of 2, 6 lap dashes.

Dash 1 will be made up of the fastest 8 qualifiers who will re-draw for positions and will line up the first 8 spots in the feature. Dash 2 will be made up of the 9th-16th fastest qualifiers and will line up the 9th through 16th starting spots.
If the night is running excessively long, the redraw positions will be used and the dashes eliminated.

The remaining cars will be lined up in B and C Mains if needed with the fastest 2 time trialers who don’t qualify from the race will line up on the front row of the B Main(s) followed by the rest of the field based on their heat race finishes.

The flexibility of the ASCS allows this format to be implemented. By incorporating the time trials into a timed by heat warm-up session it will allow for a more fast paced show by eliminating the need for Qualifiers. That will in turn allow the event to be concluded at an earlier time with the further goal of providing a fresher racing surface for the feature event.
