Danny Smith Tightens Champ Sprint Points Battle At Creek County Speedway

Bryan Hulbert – SAPULPA, Okla. (June 1, 2018) Danny Smith is no spring chicken, and if you read his Facebook page, he’ll admit it. However, that has not slowed the driver of the Same Day Tire and Auto No. 5$ down as the crafty veteran has reeled Travis Ashwood’s point’s lead to a single marker going into the season’s eighth round of competition at Creek County Speedway on Saturday, June 2.
That’s not to say that Travis Ashwood has performed poorly. In fact, the opposite is true as the No. 23 sits atop the points despite not having scored a victory this season. Making all the features so far this season, along with fairly consistent finishes, Ashwood posted his best run of the season this past Saturday night with third-place showing at the Randy Wheeler Memorial.
With momentum favoring both drivers, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will hold the top spot through the season, but the pair are not alone with a pair of drivers sitting within striking distance as Jimmy Taylor trails by only 55 markers in third, with Bailey Hughes out of the lead by 83 points in fourth. Still not out of the game with 12 events to run, Donovan Wise rounds out the top-five in Champ Sprint standings.
While the Champ Sprint point’s battle is hotly contested going into this Saturday’s action at Creek County Speedway, the remainder of the “Fast Five Weekly Series” is far from settled.
Looking to rebound from an off weekend, Chad Davis still maintains a 34-point advantage with the Modifieds. Trailing is Kendall Schultz with four top-five finishes and a half-dozen top-ten runs in seven feature starts. Joshua Tyre in third has only 61 points to make up with Brandon Dean and Matt French making the top-five.
From a rather wicked crash on May 19, it didn’t take long for Paul York to recover. Posting a runner-up finish at this past weekend’s Randy Wheeler Memorial, York continues to lead in Dwarf competition with a 39-point advantage over Rex Johnson. Rolling in on back-to-back wins, Sam Champlain has made up two positions in Dwarf Car standings and is 53 points from the lead. Jason Miles and Logan Applegate complete the top-five.
Looking to Mini-Stocks, Leroy Burger sits comfortably with a 100-point buffer over Justin Melton. While the advantage for the lead has hit three digits, the race from second through fourth is only a seven-point game with Melton being hunted by Kenny Grumadas and Michael Longacre. Still well in the mix, Jerad Traster holds fifth but is only 38 points from second.
Austin McSperitt leads the Factory Stocks with Bobby Wolfe in tow. Garnering his first win of the season this past weekend, Jimmy Owen in third sits 89 points from the lead. Calvin Lewis and Bill Newton make up the top-five.
