Championship Night at Wilmot Raceway
(Wilmot, Wis., Saturday, September 5, 2020)--The 2020 Wilmot Raceway Season Championship Night was one of three-peats and first timers.
Genoa City's Mike Simons captured his third modified championship while finally winning his first 20-lap main event of the year. Nick Simons of Genoa City, the champion's younger brother, finished second in the feature. Green Bay's Hunter Parsons took third.
Simons thanked his family and crew in victory lane, noting the car which he finished the regular season in was the one which he flipped two weeks earlier and had been completely rebuilt.
Davey Ray of Indianapolis, Ind. won his third 20-lap AutoMeter/Brewington Electric Wisconsin WingLess Sprint feature at Wilmot this year. Ray led every lap from his front row starting spot, but had to endure several restarts following cautions erasing his large lead. On the final run to the checkered, Ray held off a hard challenge from second place Allen Hafford of Beach Park, IL. Bristol's Chris Klemko took third.
Klemko's finish earned him his first ever Wilmot track championship, as he was able to hold off last year's champion Jimmy Sivia who ended up fifth in the feature. "Finally, after five years of trying," said Chris Klemko, whose late father Mike, won a Wilmot championship in 1980. "I thank my crew, family, and hopefully dad is watching from above."
The street stocks saw two firsts in the season championship main event. Cody Erickson of Algonquin, IL used a new set up suggested by his dad, Dave, and it resulted in Cody's leading every lap of every race on the final points night winning his heat race and the feature.
Courtney Atkinson of Muskego tried several times in the closing laps to get around Erickson, but the denial proved to still be enough for her to win her first ever Wilmot street stock championship to go along with a pair of Bandit 4-cylinder titles. Rob Maule of Hebron, IL was third in the feature.
"Sometimes second is good enough, especially when it comes to enough points for the championship," said Atkinson. "I guess 2020 is a good year for the Atkinsons as I win the championship and Dad(Al) will be inducted into the Southeastern Wisconsin Racing Hall of Fame."
C.J. Malueg of Johnsburg, IL won his third IRA Lightning Sprint feature of the season at Wilmot. The win was not quite enough to earn him the Wilmot championship with Ion Stear of Hebron, IL finishing second to earn him his first ever Wilmot title. Nick Petska of Spring Grove, IL was third in the feature.
Wilmot Raceway hosts the 3rd Annual Jim "Wildman" Watson Classic featuring the Dirt Kings Late Model Tour on Saturday, September 12. Rounding out the five division program in non-points racing for Wilmot are main events paying $1,000 to win WingLess Sprints, $1,000 to win Modifieds, $500 to win Street Stocks and $300 to win Bandit 4-Cylinder Stock Cars.
In addition over 100 youngsters ages 16 & under will be winners as donated bikes will be given away for free through a series of drawings in the grandstands.
Pit passes are $30.00 each with the pits opening at 3 p.m. Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m. with general admission of $20.00 for ages 12 & over, $5.00 ages 7-11 with 6 & under admitted free.
Hot laps are scheduled for 6 p.m. with racing to follow.
