Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (Oct. 16, 2018) – The Kevin Swindell Racing sprint car returned to the track last weekend with Spencer Bayston behind the wheel for the first time in approximately six weeks.

“It was a good weekend to get reacclimated,” said Bayston, who broke his leg during a crash on Aug. 23. “Our finishes both nights didn’t show the speed we had. My main idea for the weekend was to get reacclimated and comfortable being the last time I was in a sprint car I broke my leg and the last time I was in a race car I got upside down and bumped around. It wasn’t easy, but it needed to be done. I feel a whole lot better now than I did before we ran on Saturday.”

The Swindell Speed Lab backed team intended to tackle a tripleheader with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series last weekend, but Friday’s race at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., rained out.

“I was a little rusty trying to get into the flow of things,” Bayston said. “Terre Haute being the first track back was nerve-wracking because how fast it is.”

Bayston qualified 13th quickest overall on Saturday at Terre Haute Action Track in Terre Haute, Ind. However, a blown tire in a heat race resulted in a DNF. The team rebounded by winning the Last Chance Showdown to transfer into the back of the Wabash Clash main event.

“We were one of the only guys who passed cars,” Swindell said. “It’s hard to race back there when the pace slows down and the air is bad and still be able to pass cars.”

Bayston advanced from 21st to record a 16th-place result.

The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Eldora Speedway for the Last Call for Them All. Bayston timed in 11th quickest in his group and used a last-lap pass in a heat race to finish fifth, which earned a lock-in spot into the main event.

“It was an early start so I thought the track would be slick,” he said. “It was juiced up and running away from the wall a bit, which wasn’t a bad thing for me. It ended up being on the fence by the end of the night. That’s the fastest way around that place. It took me a few laps to get up there and get comfortable. The car was really good and I was a lot more comfortable than I was in the past. We worked our way forward, but unfortunately I went down a lap early. I felt like I passed a lot of cars, but it’s tough when you’re that far back because those passes didn’t count since I was a lap down and they were on lead-lap cars.”

Bayston ended with a 16th-place finish for the second straight night.

“All things considered with his physical feeling, he got up there (against the wall) and said he was comfortable and our car was better than in the past,” Swindell said. “I think he’ll be fine when we go back.”

The team will be off this weekend before resuming competition Oct. 26-27 at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., with the World of Outlaws.
