Jeremy Pilkerton Holds Off Ray Love, Jr for Pro Late Model Win at Virginia Motor Speedway; Shelton, Butler, and Brooks Also Visit Victory Lane

Jamaica, VA – Jeremy Pilkerton of Loveville, MD held off Ray Love, Jr of La Plata, MD to take home the victory in the Victory Lap Pro Late Models at Virginia Motor Speedway, on opening night of the 2023 season.

“I’m not sure I could have caught Bud Stinson, my car was a little free. I hate what happened on the last lap but we were going for the win,” commented Pilkerton in Virginia Is For Racing Lovers victory lane.

Bud Stinson so Gladstone, VA took the lead on the drop of the green flag and pulled out to a considerable lead. Jeremy Pilkerton would work to close the gap on the leader. On lap 16 Pilkerton began to close in as the two leaders worked through lapped traffic. On lap 18 Stinson broke coming out of turn 4 ending his night. Over the last sixteen laps of the 30-lap feature, Pilkerton paced the field with eleventh starting Ray Atkins, Jr trying to get by for the lead. On the last lap heading into turn 3, they touched sending Love around, with Pilkerton going on to score the win. Rounding out the top five were Curtis Hughes, Tyler Dettor, Davis Lipscombe, and Ray Love, Jr.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature two-time defending Champion Chase Butler of Mechanicsville, VA took the lead on lap two from Rick Hulson of Glen Burnie, MD and never looked back taking the win. Hulson would spin on lap 3 and have to go to the rear of the field. Hulson worked his way back to second with an inside pass on Bret Hamilton on lap 14. Hulson tried to close the gap but Butler was too strong and went on to score the victory. Hulson, Hamilton, Ryan Toole, and Cole Hilton rounded out the top five.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Brett Adkins of Saluda, VA took the lead from his outside starting position on the drop of the green flag. Atkins held a two second lead over defending Champion Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA for much of the first 18 laps. Om a restart Shelton got some bite on the outside and dove under Adkins out of turn two to take the lead. Once out front Shelton pulled away and went on to take the win. Adkins, Steve Causey, Adam Breeden, and Matt Meads rounded out the top five.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Johnny Brooks of Mechanicsville, VA started off where he left in 2022, taking the victory. Brooks took the lead on lap 2 and never looked back cruising to the win. Ryan Hutchens, Cory Bradley, Randy Hutchens, and Raymond Harper.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway is a ½ mile dirt oval track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
