Corey Almond Grabs First Pro Late Model Victory at Virginia Motor Speedway; Hamilton, Causey and Givens also visit WhosYourDriver.org Victory Lane

Jamaica, VA – A win at Virginia Motor Speedway has been eluding Corey Almond of Appomattox, VA for several years now, but that is not the case anymore as he pulled away late to take home the victory. Several cautions on the start of the feature moved Almond up to the front row. On the drop of the green flag Almond took the lead from Ryan Adams of Madison Heights, VA and began to pull away from the field. Almond held off several challenges by Matt Quade and Mark Parks to take home the victory.

“We have been working really hard to get a victory here at Virginia Motor Speedway, I hate that I slid up on that first start and got into Davis (Lipscombe) but it doesn’t take away from what I am feeling right now, commented and emotional Almond in WhosYourDriver.org victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Mark Parks, Ryan Adams, Matt Quade and Bobby Thompson.

In other action Steve Causey of Smithfield, VA scored his career first Truckin Thunder Sportsman victory at VMS and became the fourth winner in as many races; in the Budweiser Modified 30 lap feature Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA became the fourth winner in as many races by holding off a charging Tim Schulte of Troy, VA for the win and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car 25 lap feature James Givens of Sandston, VA held off Cory Bradley of Hopewell, VA at the line to score his third win of the season.

Matt Glanden and Ryan Adams led the Victory Lap Pro Late Model 19 car field to green with the caution coming out for a wreck in turn one. It took another two tries to get the race started before Corey Almond would take control of the race. For the first 14 laps Almond had to hold off the challenges of Matt Quade. Quade would have to come to pit road on lap 15 to fix a flat right rear tire.

On the restart Mark Parks tried to sweep the outside of Almond but could not pull off the pass. Almond would pull away and use the traffic to his advantage. With all the battling behind him Almond was able to dominate the remainder of the race and take home his first VMS victory. Rounding out the top five were Mark Parks, Ryan Adams, Matt Quade and Bobby Thompson.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Tyler Shipp and Steve Causey led the field to green with Causey grabbing the lead out of turn 2. Behind him the battle went three wide with fast Qualifier Brett Adkins going to the outside to move to third from his sixth place starting position. On lap 5 Adkins took second from Shipp and set out to run down the leader Causey. On the final 25 laps Adkins would take several shots at Causey for the lead only to be turned away each time. Causey would hold on to grab his first Virginia Motor Speedway victory. Rounding out the top five were Adkins, Mark Gonzales, Hunter Shelton and Michael Hayes.

The box score may show that Bret Hamilton led all 30 laps of the Budweiser Modified feature but what it doesn’t show is how hard that victory was for Hamilton. Tim Schulte and Hamilton led the 17 car field to green with Hamilton taking control of the top spot out of turn 2. By lap 10 the leaders were working their way through traffic with Hamilton using the top and Schulte down on the bottom.

With eight laps to go Schulte began getting a run on Hamilton each time out of both turn 2 and turn 4. Each time Hamilton was able to hold him off at the line. A caution with two to go set up a green, white, checkered finish. On the restart Hamilton was able to get a couple of car lengths over Schulte only to have Schulte close that gap back up. With one to go Schulte got a run on Hamilton in turn three but Hamilton took away his line and hold him off for the win. Rounding out the top five were Schulte, Francis Jarrelle, Ryan Toole and Mike Reynolds.

In the Collision One Limited Stock feature Chad Champion and Trent Clemans led the field to green. Clemans would jump to the lead out of turn 2 with Champion and James Givens in close pursuit. Givens would get by Champion for second on lap 2 and the two would beat and bang a bit before Givens settled into the spot. On the next lap Givens began applying pressure to the bumper of Clemans for the lead and on lap 6 Givens got to the outside to take the top spot. Once out front Givens looked to be in control of the race. That is until final five laps when Cory Bradley entered the picture. Bradley tried several times to get inside Givens for the lead but couldn’t pull off the pass. On the final lap Bradley made one last ditch effort to take the lead, this time getting side by sode as they raced to the checkers. Givens would hold off Bradley by a bumper at the line for the win. Rounding out the top five were Bradley, Trent Clemans, Randy Hutchens and Marty Coltrain.

The Speedway will take next Saturday July 21st off and return to racing on Saturday June 28th and host week 8 of Aaron’s Dirt Series Championship weekly action featuring the Victory Lap Pro Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions in action.
