Shelton Scores Dominating Win; Childress and Dobie Also Get Wins

Jamaica, VA – Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA showed that everyone on Mom’s Night Out at the Races at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway that he is going to be a contender for the title this season. Starting on the pole Shelton led all 35 laps in route to his first victory of 2012.

“What a car, we made a lot of changes over the winter and it looks like they are paying off, I want to dedicate this race to John Shelton, who passed away this past week,� commented Shelton in victory lane.

Troy Williams and Shelton led the field to green with Shelton taking control out of turn 2. On lap 4 John Staton, Brandon Long, Scott Adams and Davis Lipscombe had a great battle for third going on while the top two pulled away.

On lap 4 Adams would spin bring out the races second caution and closing the field back on Shelton. On the restart Williams tries to get to his inside but was denied. After moving into second Staton began pressuring Shelton for the lead but each time Shelton would hold on to the top spot.

Two more cautions would close the field on Shelton’s bumper but that was as close as anyone would get as Shelton would get his first victory of the season in dominating fashion. Rounding out the top five were Billy Tucker, Joe Ender, Scott Adams and Ed Pope. Ender would be the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with this third place finish.

In other action Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA used a bold move in lapped traffic to take the lead in the Truckin Sportsman 25 lap feature to get the win. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Brian Dobie of Fredericksburg, VA made it two for two with another strong performance and in the Collision One Limited Stock 20 lap feature Stephen Childress of St. Stephens church, VA made it two for two for the night with another victory.

Budweiser Modifieds
Aaron Harris and Chris Arnold led the Budweiser Modified field to green with Arnold leading the first circuit. It didn’t take long for Brian Dobie to get to the front, getting inside Arnold in turn 3 on lap 4 to take the lead at the stripe followed by Jimmy Duncan following to second.

Duncan made several attempts to get inside Dobie but each time Dobie shut the door to hold on to the lead. As the laps wound down Dobie’s car got stronger going on to take his second feature in as many races. Rounding out the top five were Jimmy Duncan, Chris Arnold, Page Harrison and Brandon Galloway. Donnie Smith was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with his seventh place finish.

Truckin Thunder Sportsman
Brett Adkins and Davey Pullen led the Truckin Thunder field to green with Adkins leadin the first lap over Pullen, Junior Carter, Todd Traylor and Tony Wood. On lap 3 Carter would get inside Pullen for second out of turn 4.

On lap 6 the races second caution would come out for a spin in turn 2. On the restart Carter tried to get under Adkins for the lead but could not make the pass. By lap 10 the top five were in traffic with Adkins holding on to the lead. On lap 11 another caution closed the field on Adkins bumper. On the restart Adkins held off Carter as Taylor Dogget went from fifth to second with a bold pass on the high side of turn 2.

Caution would come out twice on lap 17 the second coming for Doggett as his car would nit come up to speed and would get rearended by Tony Wood. On the restart Todd Traylor would get inside Adkins in turn 1 to take over the top spot. On lap 22 the leaders came up on lapped traffic and Traylor would get slowed allowing Stephen Childress to take the lead at the line. Childress would have to hold off Carter in a green, white checker finish to pick up his first win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Junior Carter, J.R. Guy, Hunter Shelton and Michael Hayes. Hunter Shelton was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with his fourth place finish.

Collision On Limited Stock Cars
Thomas Rose and David Bowler led the Colliosion One Limited Stock Car field to green with Bowler getting the advantage out of turn two to take the lead followed by Brett Adkins. Adkins would assume the lead on lap 4 with a pass to the inside of turn 4. Stephen Childress would follow to second and begin to pressure Adkins for the top spot. On lap 5 Adkins would spin in turn 4 while leading handing the lead to Childress.

On the restart Childress began to get pressure from Brandon Sandridge for the top spot and on lap 7 Sandridge would slip by Childress coming out of turn 4 for the lead. On the lap 9 restart Childress would get back by Sandridge for the lead and motor to his second win of the night. Rounding out the top five were Thomas Rose, Wesley Givens, Brandon Sandridge and Brett Adkins. Curtis Daughtery was the Pitts Lumber rookie of the race with his twelfth place finish.

The speedway will return to racing Saturday May 19th to host the return visit of the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series for the $10,000 to win Mid-Atlantic Spring Championship.

ULTIMATE teams have been buzzing about their return to Virginia Motor Speedway since last year’s event. Defending race winner Steve Shaver will be looking to repeat when May 19th rolls around and looking to stop him will be defending ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series Champion Chris Ferguson, current ULTIMATE point leader Chris Madden, Casey Roberts, Dennis Franklin and the rest of the ULTIMATE faithful. Also expect regional stand-outs Ricky Elliott, Jamie Lathroum, Jason Covert,

The driver’s from the South will have their hands full with a tough contingent of Mid-Atlantic hot-shoes. This is sure to turn into an epic North versus South event.

Virginia Motor Speedway is pulling out all the stops once again to draw every Late Model in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast by offering tow money to any driver not making the 26 car field with any driver not making the A Main receiving $200. Virginia Motor Speedway and ULTIMATE series officials expect the pits to be overflowing with Super Late Models as teams flock to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway for this special event.

Fans will also see the track’s Truckin Thunder Sportsman and Budweiser Modified divisions in Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action.

Competitor gates for Saturday May 19th will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30 pm with hot laps.

Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday May 19th: ULTIMATE Super Late Models (50 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 Laps); and Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps). ULTIMATE Super Late Models will run qualifying, heats, B Main(s) and Feature. All track divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features.

Adult tickets are just $18; seniors (60+) $15; military $12; students 13 – 17 years old $8; children 7 – 12 years old $4; and children 6 and under free. Pit passes will be $25. All tickets will be sold day of event.

16� coolers are welcomed but no glass is allowed. There is plenty of free lit parking and camping (no hookups) is allowed at no charge on a first come first served basis.

To enhance the fans racing experience the speedway has installed a short wave FM transmitter and all of the evening’s action can be heard at 95.5 FM. So bring your portable radio headset and enjoy hearing all the action.
