Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 13, 2020) – Misfortune stymied another stout outing at Knoxville Raceway for Kaleb Johnson last Friday night, preventing him from posting his third consecutive top-10 finish at the track by only one position.

“We had a little bad luck, but that’s part of it,” said Johnson, who was running ninth in the A Main with two laps to go when he was forced to pit for repairs. “But we were able to salvage a decent night so I’m satisfied with that.”

Johnson’s evening began with a qualifying time that was ninth quickest out of 37 cars.

“We drew well and went out first,” he said. “It was a little weird to see the track get faster as qualifying went on. But qualifying ninth was pretty solid and I was satisfied with that.”

Johnson’s qualifying effort slotted him in the fourth starting spot in his heat race.

“I got passed for fourth early by Terry McCarl, but I was able to get back by him on the bottom,” he said. “We were coming to the white flag when I showed my nose to Josh Higday for third. I probably did that too early because then he came down to block me, which was the right move on his part.”

Johnson’s total points for the evening placed him 10th on the A Main starting grid for the third consecutive race.

“The track was a lot slicker than the week before; it was really tricky,” he said. “There wasn’t anything left on the bottom in turns three and four, but there was still a little something left on the bottom in turns one and two and I was able to pass a couple of cars. I was racing for eighth at one point and then my car suddenly lost power with two laps to go.

“It turned out that something got stuck in the throttle linkage. We were able to fix it and rejoin the race. Fortunately, we were able to restart 11th because about half of the field had been lapped. But the car wasn’t the same when the race restarted. Maybe it was the tires cooling down. It was a handful the last two laps and I just hung on to finish 11th.”

Next up for Johnson will be AG Builders Night featuring the DeKalb/Asgrow Midwest Power Series presented by GRP Motorsports and Midwest Sprint Touring Series on Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., before making a return to Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to returning to Jackson,” he said. “We had some bad luck with mechanical issues there last time. While Jackson and Knoxville certainly aren’t the same, I think there are some things that we’ve learned at Knoxville that we can try at Jackson.”
