Jennerstown Speedway Complex Launches 2017 Racing Season Saturday
(Jennerstown, PA) The roar of racing engines will again be “music to the ears” of sports fans in the Laurel Highlands, this Saturday, May 13, when Jennerstown Speedway Complex’s “Opening Night” gets the green flag at 6:00pm. Five divisions of stock cars will compete for the first time in 2017, and a crop of numerous rookies are among those who will strap on a helmet. Gates open at 2:30pm with on-track practice sessions starting at 4:30pm and opening ceremonies at 5:50pm.
Last week’s chilly “Test and Tune” day for competitors allowed race teams to shake-down their new equipment, and gave rookies a chance to tour the paved oval without the pressure of competition. In fact, so many new drivers are registered to race in 2017, that separate practice sessions for just rookies were scheduled last Sunday. Later in the day, the rookies and veterans took laps together in the same testing sessions, allowing the newcomers to learn from the veterans at full speed. In spite of the cold temperatures, many race teams from each of the five divisions participated in the testing sessions. With so many race teams taking part in the test sessions, large fields of cars are expected when the prize money is on the line this week, for official competition.
Saturday, May 13, promises to have something for everyone, as the Jennerstown Speedway Complex “vendor midway” comes alive, hours before the races. Music, kids’ activities, and food/beverage specials make pre-race entertainment almost as appealing as the on-track competition. But at 6:00pm, all attention turns toward the Starting Line, as Championship Points toward each of the five divisional titles are on the line from the beginning of the first preliminary heat race. Each Saturday of the racing season, all five divisions of cars will compete: Martella’s Pharmacies LATE MODELS, Stoystown Auto Wreckers MODIFIEDS, J&J Truck Equipment STREET STOCKS, Famers Union Co-Op CHARGERS, and Somerset Trust Company FAST ‘N FURIOUS 4-CYLINDERS.
