Dennis Erb pockets $16,000 at I-55 Raceway! Walsh, Bauman & Crump also take victories!
Dennis Erb, Jr. CLICK HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS FROM I-55 RACEWAY! Pevely, MO (August 2, 2008) Forty UMP DIRTcar/Northern All Star Late Models checked in to compete for the $6,000 to win Tri-Track Challenge event at I-55 Raceway. For two drivers, there was a even bigger incentive, Dennis Erb, Jr. and Ken Schrader were set to receive a $10,000 bonus if either of the two could pull off the victory. Schrader had won the first leg of the Tri-Track Challenge at Paducah Int'l Raceway on May 30th and Dennis Erb, Jr. had won the other Tri-Track Challenge event on June 1st at Macon Speedway. Any driver that could win two out of the three Tri-Track Challenge events would pocket the $10,000 bonus. Dennis Erb, Jr. came with everything he had and was on a mission from the outset. Erb got the night started by setting fast time with a lap of 12.350 seconds around the 1/3 mile high banked dirt oval. Erb would then proceed to win his heat race in dominating fashion by nearly a full straight-away over second place finisher Jason Feger. Then, Erb would draw the pole position for the feature event when all four heat race winners re-drew for starting spots. The Carpentersville, Illinois driver would not be denied the $16,000 payday as he paced all forty laps of the main event and won in convincing fashion. Erb's only real challenger for the main event was Billy Faust, but Faust could only get within a few car lengths as Erb mastered the lapped traffic enroute to victory. Erb would put all but the top seven finishers down at least one lap. Faust would finish in second, well ahead of the third place finisher Mark Voigt. Voigt, who started all the way back in the tenth position, made a strong run towards the front to finish third. Jason Feger would also have an impressive run as he would finish in the fourth spot. Ken Schrader, who was suffering with flu symptoms all day, would complete the top five. Ray Walsh of St. Louis, MO proved almost as dominating in the UMP DIRTcar Modified division. Walsh led all twenty laps of the main event while a fierce battle raged on from the second place car on back through the field. Walsh's only glitch came with three laps remaining as his car jumped out of gear coming down the front stretch. Fortunately he was able to slam it back into gear and maintain the lead and proceeded to power his way to victory. Meanwhile, the battle for second was fierce throughout the entire event. For the first part of the race, it was Mark Miner, Doug Wood, Ricky Horton and Mike Nicholson swapping the spot around on numerous occassions. As the race began to wind down, it was Miner, Horton, Bobby Bittle and Brent Mullins fighting it out for the spot. In the end, it would be Miner holding on to finish second while Ricky Horton claimed third. Bittle would edge Mullins at the line for the fourth spot. An honerable mention goes to Matt Zimmerly who rolled his car in the semi feature, but was able to refire his car and claim the final transfer spot into the main event. Zimmerly would end up with a fourteenth place finish in the feature. Chris Soutiea also flipped his car in his heat race. He flipped several times in turn one with the car coming to rest standing on it's nose leaned up against the outside wall and fence. Soutiea was uninjured, but his car was too damaged and retired for the evening. The UMP DIRTcar Sportsman division provided a big battle for the top spot. Paul Bauman would withstand numerous challenges to earn the victory. As the event got underway, defending track champion and current point leader Troy Naeger jumped out to the lead from the outside of the front row, however his lead would only last one lap before he would suffer a flat right front. Bauman took over the point on the restart and faced serious challenges from Jeff Herzog and Troy Medley. As the laps wound down, Medley used the highside to try his move around Bauman. As they went down the back stretch on the twelfth lap, Medley would drift too high and catch the outside wall, breaking the suspension on the right front corner of his machine. A three lap shootout at the end saw Bauman hold off Herzog and hard charging Kevin Mosier and Jason Keller. At the line, Herzog would finish second behind Bauman with Mosier taking third. Keller would finish fourth and Ronnie Bader completed the top five. Jason Crump earned his victory of the season in the UMP/AARA Pro 4 Stock division. Crump took the win as he battled Pat Brewer, Jacob Buechting and Jason Marquitz for the top spot. Those four swapped out positions lap after lap in the ten lap main event. Brewer would come home second with Buechting third and Marquitz fourth. Gary Range would complete the top five.
