Dixon, Griffaw & Belken Victorious at I-55! PEVELY, MO (August 11, 2001) Kevin Gundaker jumped out to the early lead in the UMP Late Model division, leaving Clay Baumann, Ed Dixon and Danny Haynes to battle for second. Gundaker appeared to have things well under control when the caution came out on lap eleven for a crash involving points leader Mark Oller, Dave Jumper, Donnie Klein and Tim Ratajczyk. Ratajczyk was the only one of the four involved that was able to continue. While driving around the track under the caution for this accident, race leader Gundaker?s right rear wheel broke off the car and ended his night. That turned the lead over to Dixon who went on and won his third straight feature at I-55 Raceway. Haynes and Baumann battled side-by-side for second with Haynes holding on to take the spot. Ratajczyk recovered from the earlier accident to finish fourth and Danny Maguire came home fifth. There were plenty of fast UMP Modifieds on hand, but the feature was marred by a horrific twelve-car crash on back straight away on just the second lap. The race was red flagged for twenty-five minutes while medical crews worked to get Brent Mullins out of his car. Mullins was transported to a nearby hospital complaining of soreness to his ribs. No further details on Mullins condition were available at the time this article was released. Eight of the twelve cars involved suffered enough damage that they were unable to continue. Once the race restarted, Scott Weber took the lead, holding off challenges from Rich Whaley and Rusty Griffaw. Griffaw, who suffered front-end damage in the lap two crash, moved down to the bottom of the track and found a groove and was able to pull ahead and take the lead on eleventh circuit. Griffaw went on to take the win. Weber, Whaley and Bryan Collins battled three-wide for second with Weber getting the spot. Whaley was third and Collins fourth. Jim Shereck recovered from the lap two crash and finished fifth. It continues to be the Belken and Naeger show in the AARA Sportsman division. Paul Belken and Troy Naeger battled door to door for the last five laps with Belken winning by a half-car length. Scott Stuppy was third, Doug Wood fouth and Gary Haynes rounded out the top five.
